Say what? How to effectively tailor workplace communication | The ...

tailor workplace communication

By Kelly Gregorio, Advantage Capital Funds

We have been practicing it since infancy, and yet at times, mastering the art of communication can seem almost impossible. Communicating with others can be challenging, and in a work environment, finding the most effective way to converse can seem like an ever-changing code you just can?t crack.

The first thing to realize is that there is not one end-all-be-all way to successfully get your point across. In fact, the secret lies in recognizing the colorful array of communicators out there and tailoring your tactics to fluently speak each one?s language.

The Nerdy Communicator
Not to knock the nerd approach, but there is little denying that calculated and careful communication requires consideration, examination and time. Slower than most, the nerdy communicator relies heavily on fact and may even hover over details with the intensity of a microscope.

The plus side: Because of their pace and precision, the nerdy communicator usually gains enough insight to point out the most plausible and threatening consequences of a decision.

Warning: The nerdy communicator will not respond well to a loud, fast-talking counterpart. Instead, afford them some time and space to think things through and set an appointment (even if it is only an hour later) to discuss things further.

Also, because the nerdy communicator values facts above all else, he can sometimes come off as insensitive to the emotional factors that can bend decisions. Understand this and respect his style, but don?t let it disqualify a gut feeling that is just as willing to guide you.

The Vintage Communicator
Like a fine wine, the vintage communicator can have a tendency to keep things bottled up. Polite and reserved, the vintage communicator tends to share her thoughts and opinions only when pressured enough to pop a cork. Additionally, despite the varied blend of emotions, insights and flavors that led her to her opinion, she usually skips the detailed explanations and instead pours out a single-serving point.

Warning: Talking to the vintage communicator can at times be off-putting; edging her on to elaborate can make you feel like an annoying nuisance. Work on getting her to participate by asking questions that require more of an explanation than a simple yes or no. Instead of asking, ?Do you like that new feature?? ask, ?What do you think is the best and worst thing about that new feature?? instead.

Whenever you do have a successful interaction, be sure to thank her for her divulgement (?Your explanation really helped me see things differently, so thanks for taking the time to point those details out.?) as a way to communicate your need and appreciation for a two-way talk.

The Transparent Communicator
In relation to the others, the transparent communicator has some refreshing qualities. You always know where you stand with him. With zero room or interest to hide agendas, the transparent communicator tells it like it is and is driven by reaching a swift and sound decision, implementing it and then moving on.

Warning: Chances are slim to none that the transparent communicator will approach you by sheepishly looking down at the ground while kicking up some dirt and chuckling out an ?aw shucks.? Quite the opposite: Expect the transparent communicator to look you in the eye and request your immediate feedback and thoughts.

Do not allow yourself to become flustered or feel rushed by this direct approach. Intimidation is not a friend of mutual communication. Allow yourself time to put your best thinking forward. Just be sure to set a deadline, confirming when you will get back to him and the conversation with your collected thoughts.

Communication truths
While everyone communicates differently, there are some general rules that would be good practice to adopt and apply across the board. Here are five universal communication truths:

  • The quickest way to resolve a conflict or reach a mutually agreed upon decision is to understand where the other person is coming from and find a way to appeal to her needs. Achieve this by listening a little bit more than you talk.
  • Cultural differences, nature and nurture provide us with our own ideal communication DNA. Be flexible with the communication tactics and preferences of others.
  • People can easily grant their emotions the power to drive their thoughts and motivations. Take command of the conversation by finding a common goal that you and your communicator can both align yourselves with and then work toward ways to reach it.
  • People want to feel heard and satisfied. Give feedback, reiterate their concerns and strive to give people what they want (or at least meet them halfway).
  • It never hurts to have a friend. Engage in nonwork-related conversation every once in a while to maintain a friendly rapport, allowing you to approach further conversations with ease.

Small Business News Roundup For Week Ending August 24

News breaking out

Didn?t have time to read everything this week? ?The Small Business Trends editorial team keeps you informed with our easy-to-scan recaps.

Let?s jump right in with the most popular and important small business news stories on the site this week.

Outages, Outages ? Toil and Trouble

Amazon downtime may have cost the company. More than $66,000 a minute, one source reckons. Of course, with a household name like Amazon, those visitors probably returned later. But for a lesser-known and smaller business, can you count on visitors remembering and coming back? ?Or will they just go to your online competitor? ?We have a practical tip for dealing with downtime on your website. (Besides pulling your hair out, that is.)

Microsoft outage rivals Amazon?s. In length, that is ? not necessarily in actual sales dollars it cost the company. Of course, it may have cost YOU money if you were one of those Outlook.com users. It may have taken three days to get your service fully restored. Ouch.

If you own an iMac, your video card could be faulty. No worries though. Apple has recently announced a program that not only helps you figure out whether you need a new card. The company will replace it free.

People may be opening fewer of your marketing emails. That is, if the people you are emailing happen to have GMail accounts. There are worriers out there who have been antsy about the new GMail tabs, and one study suggests 18% fewer opens. ?Still, it may be too early to blame Google for this.

Services

GoDaddy acquires Locu. The deal could be big news for small businesses in need of Web services. GoDaddy already offers a website building tool. And the new addition of Locu will help businesses extend their local-marketing reach.

Fiverr reaches 2 million ?gigs.?? Fiverr has its share of questionable services offered (such as those spammy ?I?ll get you 10,000 Twitter followers in 1 day? offers). However, as long as you stay away from that kind of stuff, Fiverr can be a source of inexpensive and quick virtual labor. Small services start at $5. ?Here are some tips on how to use the site.

New service offers small biz PR.?A group calling itself the National Association of Local Advertisers has a new service that goes beyond distributing press releases. They will write them and help you develop a press campaign, too.

Social Media

72 percent of your Twitter followers are likely to buy from you. And that?s only the beginning of the helpful ROI and other information you?ll find in a new survey commissioned by Twitter, and released this week. Also learn why people follow your business on Twitter. ?Hey ? give them what they are looking for!

Facebook has new embedded posts. They may remind you of embedded tweets. But trust us, there are some differences. And if you?re worried about the shelf-life of your Facebook posts, this is one way to address it.

Franchises are embracing social media. But as this new approach to marketing and PR evolves, challenges remain. Franchise correspondent Joel Libava gives us a look at how things have changed.

Tech

Smartwatches coming from Samsung and Apple.?Wearable tech is getting more popular. ?These kinds of watches are already available from companies like Pebble and Sony. Though they can?t yet be used as a phone or even to, say, update your Facebook page, they are great accessories that work along with ?smartphones.

New intelligent coffee kiosk coming. It could be an interesting business model. It could also be another alternative to supplying your staff with their morning cup of joe.

Startups

Americans aren?t investing in startups. In fact, only about 5.3 percent of Americans invested in startups in the three years leading up to 2012, recent data suggests. That?s despite all the focus on venture and angel funding. ?Unless the startup entrepreneur is a relative, it?s not likely the average American will be investing in a startup anytime soon. ?Scott Shane, Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies at Case Western Reserve University, has more.

Choosing a fiscal year explained. Not every business can choose a fiscal year for income tax reporting purposes. For those that can, Nellie Akalp, CEO of CorpNet, reviews the options. See whether your business can choose.

Operations

Better benefits could lure better talent. A recent report suggests small businesses are competing for a limited pool of interested and qualified applicants. That means leaving some positions unfilled. One possible incentive is a great benefits package, says Michael W. Zuna, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Aflac U.S.

WordPress explained for the entrepreneur. Few content management systems worth the time are simple or easy. But Jennifer Shaheen, CEO and President of The Technology Therapy Group, gives an overview of the benefits the WordPress platform has to offer.

Marketing

Grumpy Cat is a marketing machine. We?ve written before about this photogenic feline with the unforgettable face. The cat, named Tardar Sauce but known as Grumpy Cat, can teach us all a few lessons about branding in the digital age.

Don?t get your hashtags hijacked.?Ever see a brand?s Twitter hashtag being used for snark and sarcasm? Don?t let that happen to your marketing campaign. ? Small Business Trends CEO Anita Campbell gives some pointers of the types of hashtags susceptible to hijacking ? and how to avoid it.

Book Reviews

How to develop more business. Moving too slowly on?business development can kill your business, or make it stagnate. Pierre DeBois reviews The Professional?s Guide to Business Development: How To Win Business In The Professional Services.

(AP) ? Disgraced Chinese politician Bo Xilai went on trial Thursday on charges of bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power, marking the ruling Communist Party's attempts to draw a line under one of its most lurid political scandals in decades.

Bo entered the courthouse under police escort in the eastern city of Jinan, the court said, in closely choreographed proceedings held under extremely tight security, with police sealing off nearby roads with red and yellow barriers and bundling onlookers into a minivan.

Once the powerful party boss in the megacity of Chongqing, Bo became the most senior leader to fall from power in years after revelations emerged that his wife had killed a British businessman. His removal marked China's biggest upheaval in the leadership since the violent suppression of the Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protests in 1989.

Five of Bo's relatives attended the trial, the Jinan Intermediate People's Court said in a stream of posts on its Sina Weibo microblog, though the relatives were not identified. The postings were a rare display of openness for a high-profile political trial in China. Journalists from foreign media outlets were kept from the courtroom, but the court said 19 reporters were among the 110 people attending the trial.

"All the seats are filled and all is in good order," the court said.

The scandal was triggered last year when Bo's police chief, a top aide, fled to a U.S. consulate in a neighboring city, an event that embarrassed the party's leadership ahead of a key political transition. It would later emerge that the police chief had evidence of the Briton's murder, making the Bo family an international diplomatic liability for the leadership.

Chinese authorities have released few details of the charges Bo faces, but analysts say they appear carefully calibrated to lay blame on Bo's individual actions and provide enough culpability to end his political career, while avoiding allegations that could expose the impunity with which top Chinese officials are believed to operate before they fall from favor.

A person with direct knowledge of the case has said Bo is accused of accepting bribes amounting to more than 20 million yuan ($3.3 million) and embezzling 5 million yuan ($820,000) while he was posted to the eastern city of Dalian. The abuse of power allegation is related to his alleged attempts in Chongqing to block an investigation into the murder by his wife in late 2011 and his sacking of his police chief, reports say.

?A verdict of guilt is all but assured, because the outcome of such trials involving high-profile politicians in China are usually decided by backroom negotiations by politicians and handed down by the court. Bo's downfall also has been widely perceived as the result of his defeat in party infighting ahead of China's once-a-decade leadership transition last fall.

"Bo Xilai's faction fell out of grace during the power struggle among top leaders," said Pu Zhiqiang, a prominent human rights lawyer based in Beijing. "In reality, it does not matter what he is charged with ... because this is it is a political trial, which does not represent the spirit of law."

Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, confessed to killing Neil Heywood and was handed a suspended death sentence last year that will likely be commuted to life imprisonment. Bo's aide, Wang Lijun, was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment for making his thwarted defection bid and helping Gu cover up the murder.

A few supporters of Bo appeared at the court on Wednesday, a day before the trial, blasting the legal proceedings as unjust and hailing his work as leader in Chongqing.

That Bo enjoys residual popularity among some of the Chinese public underscores how effective the media-savvy politician was in portraying himself as a man of the people. He spoke often of tackling the burgeoning income inequality gap, and introduced housing and other social policies in Chongqing that made him beloved by the poor.

Bo mobilized people in Chongqing to sing communist anthems, campaigns that resonated with people who've felt increasingly alienated from a party and government seen as corrupt and morally bankrupt.

"Bo tapped into these ideas with the 'red songs,' and invoked a certain kind of camaraderie and unity that has been missing," said Dali Yang, head of the University of Chicago Center in Beijing. "He created in some way a moral universe that made people feel much more confident and hopeful in some ways, certainly in Chongqing."

Bo's Communist revival efforts had alarmed the elite in China's previous administration who were wary of the violent excesses of the Mao Zedong's radical era and of any one politician gaining prominence. However, China's new Communist Party leader Xi Jinping, installed last fall, appears keen to use some of Mao's tactics, including an ideological campaign urging cadres to purify themselves of corruption and bind more closely to the masses.

Arrighty, here's a proper map of the continent.

Image

It's up to all of us to suss out where the hell the countries and cities go. I'll start off by placing the Dwarven kingdoms in the northern mountains.

Image

From this point forward, the map's gonna be a bit larger so that you can see the features, so you may wann right click on the map nd open it in another tab to see the whole thing. Black symbols on a space signify a city or town, Red symbols are capitals. There are different symbols if we need monuments or something, and I can even put markers on the map to show what part of Drevair our Characters are in if y'all want.

Sony Xperia SP gets a firmware update, no Android 4.2 yet

Sony has started rolling up the Android 4.1.2 software update for both the Xperia SP C5302 HSPA+ and the Xperia SP C5303 LTE. The update brings the phone's firmware to version 12.0.A.2.245 and users report that although it's not Android 4.2.2, it brings the UI visuals to almost perfectly match the Xperia Z's.

In the software update for the the Xperia SP,which is based on Android 4.1.2, Sony has included a bunch of new Small apps and has made both the navigation and status bars semi-transparent. Another treat is the quick settings menu available on the notification shade.

The changelog also includes an improved camera, mainly in terms of low-light performance. Finally, along with the many bug fixes and minor changes, the soft keys on the navigation bar are now black instead of grey.

While the update is now on its way to the international 3G and LTE versions of the Xperia SP, you may have to wait a while to get it knocking on your screen. If you don't want to wait for, then follow the source link below for instructions on how to install it yourself.

Office 365 Power BI app launched for Windows mobile

Office 365 users can now get business intelligence insights from Microsoft?s cloud-based productivity offering direct to their Windows mobile-powered tablet, the company has announced.

The new app uses Microsoft?s Power BI offering and, the organisation claims, will allow Office 365 users to stay connected to their favourite reports while on the move.

?The Power BI mobile app allows you to view and stay connected to multiple live reports from Office 365 from your Windows tablet,? the company said.

?Tag your favourite reports in the Power BI Site in Office 365 and have them appear in the mobile app or browse and discover new Office 365 reports from your tablet,? it added.

The app also features sharing functionality and users can browse all their reports in the Office 365 cloud.

The app will run on Windows mobile tablets with x86, x64 and ARM processors. It is currently only available in international and US English.

The Power BI app is available immediately, however it does require a paid-for Microsoft Power BI for Office 365 subscription before it can be used.

The news comes just days after the Redmond giant announced Office 365 had an average of 99.965 per cent uptime over the past four quarters, between June 2012 and June 2013.

Rajesh Jha, who leads the Office 365 engineering team, said in a blog post: ?We recognise that productivity apps are mission critical; using them is how work gets done.

?While?information has been available in detail for our current customers ... we're [now] making this information?available to all customers?considering Office 365.?

Iranian guessing game: Ahmadinejad's next move

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Mock condolences arriving by text message in Iran announce the political "death" of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Memorial services, the joke continues, are planned at the United Nations in tribute to his swaggering style each year in New York.

The satire may bring smirks from the many foes Ahmadinejad has racked up over eight years in office, stemming from several high-profile feuds with the ruling clerics and one disputed re-election. But no one is truly counting Ahmadinejad out of Iran's political future, which could face some bumpy times as he decides his next moves and his opponents plot possible payback.

One way or another, the combative and polarizing aura of the soon-to-be former president is not going to dissipate once his centrist successor, Hasan Rouhani, is sworn in Aug. 4.

Ahmadinejad has remained evasive on his post-presidential plans. Speculation, however, is fanning out in several directions, including media boss and freelance statesman. A trip to Iraq this week ? one of his last major moments in the spotlight as president ? will be watched closely for clues on his next moves.

"The only thing that's certain at this point is that Ahmadinejad and his team are just not going to pack up and go away," said Rasool Nafisi, an Iranian affairs analyst at Strayer University in Virginia. "Iran's political system has to be prepared for that."

This is what makes Ahmadinejad's departure such a potential shock to Iran's system.

Since turbulent shakeouts immediately after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran's other former presidents have remained rooted in the system. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who left the presidency in 1989, rose to become supreme leader. His successor, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, took posts within the ruling clerics. Even reformist Mohammad Khatami was careful not to fight back too hard over sweeping crackdowns on the opposition and some of the freedoms he helped engineer.

But Ahmadinejad is the kind of high-profile figure Iran has rarely seen before: He has essentially become a political orphan.

The ruling establishment holds a powerful grudge over his maverick-style challenges to Khamenei's authority to set policies and pick key Cabinet posts, which left Ahmadinejad severely weakened in recent years. Liberals long ago rejected Ahmadinejad's firebrand ways, which included anti-Israeli diatribes and questions over the Holocaust that also hammered his image in the West. And many former conservative backers drifted away when it became a loyalty test or either Ahmadinejad or the supreme leader.

This leaves Ahmadinejad with a small cadre of allies and pockets of supporters around the country ? mainly poor and rural Iranians grateful for his government's monthly handouts.

How he may leverage this remaining clout "is very difficult to predict," said Ali Bigdeli, a professor in international relations in Tehran's Beheshti University.

One intriguing hint was given last week by his closest aide, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei, who said it was "likely" Ahmadinejad could launch a media outlet.

"We are not considering formation of a political party," said Mashaei, who was barred by the ruling clerics from the ballot in June's election as part of the high-level fallout against Ahmadinejad. "But the media can be effective. The society needs media."

He gave no other clues, but any media venture would certainly meet stiff resistance from the ruling theocracy and the powerful Revolutionary Guard, which hold influence over a host of news services, TV stations and newspapers.

"Ahmadinejad is very interested remaining in the media spotlight," said Hamid Reza Shokouhi, editor of the pro-reform Mardomsalari daily. "He will use it as a tool to return him or any close ally to power."

Some pro-Ahmadinejad sources also have floated the idea he would establish an aid-giving foundation known as "Bahar," or "Spring," as a way to maintain his populist image and keep alive options for a comeback bid in 2017. Iran's presidents must leave office after two consecutive terms, but it's possible to return after a political hiatus ? as Rafsanjani tried in 2005 in his surprise loss to Ahmadinejad.

Ahmadinejad, meanwhile, has not slowed down even as Rouhani prepares to take over. He has kept up a steady pace of speeches, ribbon-cuttings and trips. It suggests he wants to keep his statesman image sharp for possible independent outreach and attempts at keeping a voice in Iranian affairs.

On Thursday, Ahmadinejad plans to begin a two-day trip to neighboring Iraq, where Shiite power Iran carries important influence with the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. He also is scheduled to visit the Shiite religious center of Najaf, an important power base and source of potential funds for Ahmadinejad.

Yet other challenges await Ahmadinejad once he leaves office.

In early June, a criminal court summoned Ahmadinejad over a lawsuit filed by the country's parliament speaker and a parliamentary committee. There have been no further details, but Ahmadinejad and the speaker, Ali Larijani, have waged political feuds for years. In February, Ahmadinejad released a barely audible video that purported to show discussion over bribes that included Larijani's brother.

Behrouz Shojaei, a columnist in several pro-reform newspapers, believes more legal salvos over his presidency may come as "indirect punishment" for battling the supreme leader.

"However much Ahmadinejad may resist, though, there is the reality that he will no longer be president and the world's attention will shift to his successor," said the professor, Nafisi. "It began happening the moment Rouhani was elected."

When Ahmadinejad returned earlier this month from a trip to Moscow, only a small group of supporters came to Tehran's airport to welcome him. In the past, hundreds of people often crowded similar arrivals home.

Meanwhile, Rouhani has been embraced by Iran's fast-moving street culture in ways never open to Ahmadinejad.

The phrase "Rouhani, mochakerim," or "Thank you, Rouhani," has become a catchall term for hope, achievements and complaints about Iran's sanctions-shattered economy. It's also a backhanded way for Ahmadinejad's opponents to bid him goodbye.

The quip first surfaced just days after the June 14 election when Iran's soccer team qualified for the 2014 World Cup after beating South Korea. It then went viral on Farsi websites.

This month, a hip-hop audio clip carried the refrain "Rouhani, mochakerim." The Tehran weekly, Hamshahri Javan, printed many of the Internet messages in graffiti style on its front page. One pointed out the major economic challenges ahead: "Inflation declined to zero, Rouhani, mochakerim." On Sunday, Iran's Central Bank put the inflation rate at nearly 36 percent.

Later, one blog post tried to put some perspective on the transition from Ahmadinejad to Rouhani.

"We ask Rouhani to explain to the people that he is a president," it said, "not Harry Potter."

WASHINGTON ? The federal appeals court in Washington on Tuesday set Sept. 9 as the date for oral arguments in the so-called net neutrality case that could be seminal for federal regulation of Internet traffic.

The highly anticipated hearings, originally expected to take place this past spring, will pit Verizon Communications against the Federal Communications Commission as the biggest U.S. wireless provider challenges the FCC's order that guides how Internet service providers manage their networks.

The ruling of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit will have major implications for the increasingly partisan debate over the degree of regulatory power possessed by the federal communications agency.

Net neutrality is the principle that Internet users should be able to access any Web content and use any applications they choose, without restrictions or varying charges imposed by the Internet service provider or the government.

Judges Judith Rogers, Laurence Silberman and David Tatel will hear the arguments in the case, according to the order issued on Tuesday.

The FCC's 2011 open Internet rules require Internet providers to treat all Web traffic equally and give consumers equal access to all lawful content, even if, for instance, it comes from a competitor or disagrees with their political views.

Verizon and other critics argue that the FCC's rules are an unwarranted government intrusion into regulating the Internet, including which content consumers may access and which companies may provide that content, and should be thrown out.

Public interest groups have criticized the rules as too weak, saying the FCC was swayed by big industry players. Democrats on Capitol Hill have said they would push against the court's decision if it sides with Verizon.

The FCC's position in the case received a boost from the Supreme Court in May, when in a separate case it ruled in favor of giving regulatory agencies deference in interpreting the extent of their own regulatory authority.

The case is Verizon v. FCC, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, case No. 11-1355 (and consolidated cases).

Israel's Netanyahu says Iran closer to nuclear 'red line'

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Iran was getting closer to the "red line" he set for its nuclear program and warned the international community not to be distracted by the crises in Syria and Egypt.

Tehran was continuing enrichment activities and building inter-continental ballistic missiles, which could give it a military nuclear capability, he said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

At the United Nations in September, Netanyahu drew a red line across a cartoon bomb to illustrate the point at which Iran will have amassed enough uranium to fuel one nuclear bomb. He said Iran could reach that threshold by mid-2013.

"They haven't yet reached it but they're getting closer to it and they have to be stopped," Netanyahu told CBS. He said the West's sanctions against Tehran needed to be intensified and backed up with the threat of a credible military option.

Netanyahu also said Iran was building faster centrifuges that could allow it to speed up its enrichment activities.

Israel, widely believed to be the Middle East's only nuclear-armed power, has issued veiled warnings for years that it might attack Iran if international sanctions and diplomacy fail to curb Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

Israel has long insisted on the need for a convincing military threat and setting clear lines beyond which Iran's nuclear activity should not advance.

"I think it's important to note that we (Israel) can't allow it to happen. Our clocks are ticking at a different pace. We're closer than the United States, we're more vulnerable, and therefore we'll have to address this question of whether to stop Iran before the United States does," Netanyahu said.

The Israeli prime minister said he was concerned that the military conflict in Syria and the political crisis in Egypt had pushed the Iran nuclear issue lower on the international agenda.

"There are many important issues that we have to deal with and I have a sense that there is no sense of urgency on Iran and yet Iran is the most important and the most urgent matter of all," he said.

Police injured, 11 arrests in Northern Ireland Orange clashes

By Ian Graham

BELFAST (Reuters) - More than 30 police officers were injured and 11 people arrested during overnight violence around traditional Orange Day parades in Northern Ireland, authorities said on Saturday.

Thousands of pro-British Protestants march every summer in the British province, a regular flashpoint for sectarian violence as Catholics, many of whom favor unification with Ireland, see the parades as a provocation.

Violence between the two religious groups still sometimes flares since a peace deal was signed in 1998, which largely ended three decades of trouble. Much of Belfast remains divided along religious and nationalist lines.

A total 32 police were injured in what Chief Constable Matt Baggott described as "shocking and disgraceful" violence, including head, eye and leg wounds. Another 400 reinforcements were being brought in from Britain.

Tens of thousands of Orange Order marchers, wearing orange sashes and waving British flags, paraded at more than a dozen venues across Northern Ireland on Friday to mark the 1690 victory at the Battle of the Boyne by Protestant Prince William of Orange over Catholic King James of England.

The Orange Order was angered this year when authorities ruled they could not walk along a stretch of road that divides the two communities, a flashpoint for trouble in the past.

"I think that this morning some of the leadership of the Orange Order need to reflect upon whether they provided the responsible leadership asked for by myself and the party leaders," Baggott told a news conference.

Calm had returned on Saturday and the Orange Order said it was "suspending protest action" over the ruling, after it had previously said it would continue over the weekend.

Overnight, rioters had thrown petrol bombs, bricks, bottles and fireworks at police, who responded with plastic bullets and water cannon.

Nigel Dodds, a lawmaker representing North Belfast in Britain's Parliament, was released from hospital after he was hit on the head by a missile, said his party colleague Nelson McCausland.

Heavy Rains Send Iowa's Precious Soil Downriver

What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time, the Midwest was heading into one of the worst droughts in decades. Now much of the region is soggy.

But the biggest loser from this year's heavy rains? The land itself.

The Environmental Working Group, drawing on analysis done by Iowa State University's Iowa Daily Erosion Project, found in a recent report that during one five-day period in May, 50 townships in Iowa lost more than 5 tons of topsoil per acre.

As EWG puts it: "Those 1.2 million acres of farmland may have lost more precious topsoil in five days than what is tolerable over an entire year." The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service considers an annual rate of topsoil loss of five tons "tolerable," but EWG says "a truly sustainable rate of erosion is far lower."

As Abbie Fentress Swanson reported last week, the lost topsoil contains a huge amount of nutrients, like nitrogen and phosphorus, that are essential for growing crops. Once they enter rivers, lakes and bays, they can trigger algal growth.

Several members of EWG's Iowa-based staff took a road tour of the damage. You can browse photos they took along the way on an interactive map.

According to EWG, much of the soil loss could be prevented through more aggressive soil-conservation practices, including "no-till" planting, grass waterways and terraces. "Every no-till field with properly placed grass waterways showed only nominal signs of erosion," says the report. "Well-protected fields suffered little damage even where poorly protected fields just down or across the road had suffered badly."
