Game recap: Boise St. 32, New Mexico 29

The No. 24 Boise St. Broncos narrowly averted a upset by their unheralded host, the New Mexico Lobos, but came up with plays on offense and defense when they needed them in the fourth quarter to escape Albuquerque with a 32-29 victory Saturday night.

The No. 24 Boise St. Broncos narrowly averted a upset by their unheralded host, the New Mexico Lobos, but came up with plays on offense and defense when they needed them in the fourth quarter to escape Albuquerque with a 32-29 victory Saturday night.Turnovers played a big part in the Mountain West Conference for both teams.

The Broncos used three UNM turnovers to build a 25-0 halftime lead. The Lobos countered in the second half, using a pair of BSU fumbles to vault them to 29 second half points and the near upset before 28,270 at Branch Field at University Stadium.

"It was two different games, two halves of football and two different games," said New Mexico coach Bob Davie. "The biggest reason was because of turnovers. In the first half we turned the ball over three times. We were able to move the ball, but we had no points at halftime. Defensively, we've got to keep plugging away... keep plugging away. If we don't force some turnovers, we have a hard, hard time."

Looking nothing like the team that was beaten 45-0 by Boise St. in both teams' regular season closer in 2011, New Mexico (2-3, 0-1 MWC) close to 32-29 on a touchdown run by freshman quarterback Cole Gautsche with 7:42 left in the game. The score was made possible by a 53-yard fumble return by linebacker Joe Stoner after UNM's A.J. Butler stripped the ball from Boise ball carrier Shane Williams-Rhodes on an end around the play before. On the ensuing drive, the Lobo defense allowed the Broncos into UNM territory but stiffened at the UNM 27-yard line.

Boise St. kicker Michael Frisina missed a 44-yard field goal attempt to give the Lobos two minutes of clock and at chance to at least tie the game. But the Lobos went three-and-out, with senior quarterback B.R. Holbrook pass on 4th-and-4 at the UNM 33 yard-line - the only UNM pass attempt in the entire second half -- was broken up by BSU's Tommy Smith. The Broncos were then able to run out the clock to seal the victory.Boise St. (3-1, 1-0) finished with 514 yards of total offense. Quarterback Joe Southwick sparked the Bronco offense with 311 yards on 24-of-34 passing with three touchdown sand no interceptions while Jay Ajayi racked up 118 yards rushing on six carries with one touchdown. D.J. Harper added 98 yards on 19 rushes.

Gautsche scored two touchdowns and rushed for 73 yards on 11 carries for UNM. Kasey Carrier added 93 yards on 18 carries with one touchdown. Jhurell Pressley scored a touchdown and added 58 yards as New Mexico netted 330 of its 374 offensive yards using the run.In the first half, the Broncos defense did its job forcing three first half fumbles while the offense pulled off a pair of big plays in the half to give the Broncos and advantage they never relinquished. Southwick connected on a 50-yard pass play to Dallas Burroughs down the center of the UNM defense to finish the first quarter.

Boise scored two plays later when on a 10-yard TD strike from Southwick to Chris Potter to give BSU a 10-0 advantage.Jay Ajayi broke open the game in the with 3:52 left in the half when he broke free for a 71-yard run up the middle. Ajayi scored two plays later on a 1-yard run to make the score 25-0.

New Mexico (2-3, 0-1) twice moved into Broncos territory in the first half only to fumble away the ball to extinguish the drives. On the opening drive freshman Cole Gaustche fumbled on the Boise 39-yard line to set up the Broncos' first score. Then on their best drive of the half, UNM's Lamaar Thomas fumbled the ball away on the Boise 14-yard line.

Ajayi then ran the ball 71-yards the other way on the very next play."(At halftime I told them) ?Narrow the focus - don't think about all of the ramifications," said Davie. "'Don't think about what the final score might be. Don't think about how hardwe worked and we might not get anything out of it. Just go play the second half.'"New Mexico's second half comeback was sparked when UNM's Jeric Magnant forced Boise's Burroughs to fumble the kickoff to start the second half. The Lobos took just 6 plays to drive 26 yards and score their first touchown to make the score 25-7 in favor of Boise. On the ensuing drive, BSU drove all the way to the UNM 4-yard line but the Lobos forced Southwick to throw an incompletion on 4th-and-1 to force a turnover on downs.

The Lobos took the ball 96 yards on seven plays - including a 40-yard run by Gautsche -to score and cut the lead to 25-14 with 3:22 left in the third quarter.Boise St. drove for a touchdown on the next drive to make the score 32-14, but UNM would no go away. The Lobos put together another touchdown drive, punctuated by a 7-yard run by Gautsche to pull New Mexico to within 32-21 with 5:17 left. The Lobos forced a fumble on the next play to set up the final sequence.

"I really appreciate our team in the second half - I really appreciate the fight," saidDavie. "You're down 25-0 at halftime; they really pulled off a little bit right there at the end of the first half. Chris Peterson kind of sat on it a little bit. But the second half shows you what this (team) can be."

Obama stops Chinese firm from owning US projects

BEIJING: Citing national security risks, US President Barack Obama has blocked a Chinese company from owning four wind farm projects near a navy base where the US military tests unmanned drones and electronic-warfare planes.

Obama ordered Ralls Corp, a company owned by Chinese nationals, to divest its interest in the wind farms it purchased earlier this year near the Naval Weapons Systems Training Facility in Boardman, Oregon, the Shanghai Daily reported.

The case reached the president's desk after the Committee on Foreign Investments in the US (CFIUS) determined there was no way to address the national security risks posed by the Chinese company's purchases.

Only the president has final authority to prohibit such a transaction.

The report, however, did not say what risks the wind farm purchases presented.

The treasury department said the CFIUS made its recommendation to Obama after receiving an analysis of the potential threats from the Office of the director of national intelligence, the Chinese daily said.

The military has said it uses the Oregon naval facility to test unmanned drones and the EA-18G "Growler", an electronic warfare aircraft that accompanies US fighter bombers on missions. It jams enemy radar, destroying them with missiles along the way.

At the Oregon site, the planes fly as low as 61 metres and at nearly 500 km per hour.

The treasury department said Obama's decision was specific to this transaction and does not set a precedent for other foreign investment in the US by China or any other country.

However, Xinhua said in a commentary: "The move has once again revealed the hypocrisy of US politics and double standard on so-called welcoming foreign investment."

Gov. Jerry Brown OKs bill on community-college grad rates

LONG BEACH -- Gov. Jerry Brown on Thursday signed into law the Student Success Act of 2012, a bill designed to improve graduation and transfer rates for California's community colleges.

State Sen. Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, who authored SB 1456, said the new legislation will direct critical support services to community college students and help to pave a better path to graduation.

"It is unacceptable that more than 50 percent of community college students are not graduating or transferring within six years," Lowenthal said in a statement. "SB1456 is the first step toward a community college system that is refocused and rededicated to student success and achievement."

Long Beach City College President Eloy Oakley, who supported the bill, commended Gov. Jerry Brown and Lowenthal for their work.

"This new law will implement reforms aimed at increasing the number of students that obtain a meaningful college credential and supports efforts to close the achievement gap that exists in higher education," Oakley said in a statement.

Among the key initiatives:

-- Students will be required to participate in a first-year orientation and develop an education plan to ensure they are placed in the right courses.

-- Colleges will be required to post a "student success score card" on their websites as a condition for receiving certain funds. The tool is meant to help measure a college's progress on student success.

-- Students will

receive incentives, such as fee waivers, for meeting their educational goals.

The bill passed the Senate in May with a bipartisan vote of 33-1. In August, the bill passed the Assembly unanimously.

The bill comes at a time of change for the California Community College system. On Thursday, California Community Colleges named veteran administrator Brice Harris as the new leader of the nation's largest system of public higher education.

Harris, who previously headed the Los Rios Community College District, will start his job as the 15th chancellor of the state's 112-campus system Nov. 6. He will replace Jack Scott, who retired this month after more than 3 1/2 years.

Marseille residents force out Roma migrants

MARSEILLE, France (Reuters) - Residents of a poor neighborhood of Marseille forced Roma migrants from their camp and set it ablaze in a vigilante eviction that French rights groups feared could set a precedent.

France is home to some 15-20,000 Roma, most of whom come from Romania and Bulgaria. Tensions over illegal camps, often on the outskirts of cities, have grown since the Socialist government made it harder for police to remove them.

Furious over a spate of robberies they blamed on the Roma squatters and unwilling to wait for a formal eviction, locals surrounded the makeshift camp in the north of the port city of Marseille on Thursday and ordered its 40 inhabitants to leave.

When the camp was cleared, they set fire to what remained: a few tents and washing machines.

"People say the government isn't doing anything so they take the situation into their own hands - this is what we had feared the most," said Fathi Bouaroua, an official at the Abbe Pierre Foundation, which tends to the homeless.

President Francois Hollande's four-month-old government has cleared dozens of camps and deported hundreds of Roma.

But after criticism of former Nicolas Sarkozy's hard line on Roma camps, it also made evictions more difficult - requiring a court order where previously an edict from a regional prefect had been enough.

The vigilantes in Marseille acted after being told they would have to wait for a court order, which could take weeks.

Locals had informed police of their plans. While officers were present they made no attempt to stop the eviction, which took place without violence, a police source told Reuters.

The mayor of the neighborhood, already plagued by gang violence and drug dealing, said she could not condone the forced eviction of Roma, but did understand the residents' irritation.

"They told me they were fed up with the situation, with having excrement everywhere," Samia Ghali told Le Figaro newspaper, adding that the new procedure was causing delays. "We need to stop sitting round tables and take decisions."

Further unlawful evictions were likely, she warned.

Roma are often accused of petty crime and littering.

In August, the government ordered dozens of camps cleared and sent hundreds of Roma back to their home countries, drawing European Union concerns over potential abuses of migration law.

Activists said the clearances had created a tolerance for targeting Roma, dredging up bad memories from the past.

During the Nazi occupation of France, Roma were arrested and put into camps along with Jews, prostitutes and homosexuals. Many died in the gas chambers. Roma camps remained operational in France even after the war, with the last closing in 1946.

Rights groups also drew parallels with the vigilante attacks during the Algerian War for independence, when locals hunted down North African immigrants. Many residents of the Saint Louis neighborhood in Marseille are of North African origin.

"Targeting a population and destroying its few possessions due to their ethnic background is a crime that recalls a sad time in our history," said Christophe Madrolle, vice president of Marseille's urban community. "Has the hunt for Roma begun?"

Get Back Deleted Media Data on Your Mac - Data Recovery

Saturday 29 september 2012 6 29 /09 /Sep /2012 05:09

Is it possible to recover Media data after formatting?

The answer is definitely YES! In fact, disk formatting doesn't erase the files (until they are overwritten by other files). When you format your Mac hard drive or store device, the file system of disk is replaced with a new empty file system, thus, the entries of all the files and directories stored on the disk are erased and they become inaccessible. But hard drive maintains an index file, which tells the operating system where a particular file is stored. When you format the hard drive, links between index and file are deleted. The file remains physically intact. You can restore formatted files from hard drive as long as the original files are not overwritten by other files.

How to Recover Formatted Hard Drive?

Since it is possible to recover formatted hard drive, how to get back deleted data, such as the media data, has really confused some Mac users. In brief, there are two ways: Restore and Recover.

If you have backed up your files, you can easily restore formatted files from your backup files.

If there is no valid backup, you need computer format recovery software - uFlysoft Photo Recovery for Mac, to recover formatted media data from computer hard drive. uFlysoft Photo Recovery for Mac enables you to do it, no matter formatted, deleted or lost files due to different reasons.

Camera-equipped helmet gives you superhuman vision

11 hrs.

If you think of high dynamic range imaging, or HDR, you probably think of crazy panoramic?cityscapes or lighthouses where everything pops with impossible clarity ? imagine seeing the whole world that way.?These goggles let you look at everything in real-time 3-D HDR?? and it's more useful than you might think.

The HDRchitecture?project, by researchers at the University of Toronto, was presented earlier this month at the SIGGRAPH imaging convention in Los Angeles.

The most dramatic application the team could think of for showing off the capabilities of their system was welding, where the light from the torch is so bright that it can blind the welder if he doesn't wear a?leaded-glass visor. Unfortunately, this renders the rest of the world, including his immediate surroundings, quite dark. What if you could combine the two images ? the dark one that shows the torch clearly, and the light one that shows everything else?

Think of high dynamic range as wearing night-vision goggles and sunglasses at the same time, with none of the downsides.?You can see?highlights and shadows that would be blown out or too dark to see otherwise.?

To achieve this,?the team's?EyeTap helmet uses a pair of cameras?take?multiple exposures of the same view and combine them in real time, in such a way that no part is too dark and no part is?too light.?

As you can see in the video, that means that the welder can clearly see not only the super-bright torch, but the hot metal it's touching and the rest of the object as well. This could greatly improve not just the quality of the welder's work, but the safety of his workshop.

The video below demonstrates the futuristic-looking helmet in a few situations; there's a good comparison at 1:45, and more everyday situations towards the end.

It's not just for welders. If the technology were developed, a driver would never be blinded by the glare of the sun, and a soldier would never miss a mine hiding in a shadow. The possibilities are really very exciting.

Of course, the device itself will have to be adapted somewhat before you can wear it in the car; it's clearly a bit bulky at the moment. But this "mediated reality," as the narrator describes it, is potentially very powerful. More information and much supporting documentation can be found at the EyeTap site, or at Road to VR.

Article by Edison

Though the Reserve stored rates on maintain this month Tomorrow Finance director John Allen mentioned it seemed more and more doubtless that borrowers could be paying more to finance their residence purchases. ?With house prices continuing to rise and the inevitability of charge rises, every proportion point counts,? stated Mr Allen. ?We?ve been in a position to negotiate an extension of our particular discounted price to use to all loans from $ 250,000. The savings over the lifetime of the mortgage might be price as much as $ ????. The discounted rate of interest for loans between $ 250,000 and $ 500,000 is 6.forty nine per cent; from $ 500,000 to $ 1 million, 6.4 per cent; and over $ 1 million 6.39 per cent. These rates are lower than the most cost effective marketed main financial institution mortgage rates. Tomorrow Finance had previously only been capable of offer a particular price to loans over $ 500,000. ABOUT TOMORROW FINANCE Tomorrow Finance is an independent Home Loan Comparison or information provider with a enterprise mannequin that connects house consumers with a number of the most cost-effective bank loans in the country. They?re able to do so by working a skinny net-primarily based operation and never charging trailing commissions, the little-recognized fee that allows brokers to maintain on taking a cut over the lifetime of a loan. The arrival of Tomorrow Finance in the mortgage market spells the beginning of a brand new technology in the way borrowers negotiate their home loans. The banks like it as a result of customers are referred to them via the web site and the commissions are a fraction of that typically paid to brokers and without the on-going cost. Prospects prefer it as a result of they have access to a pre-negotiated discounted Home Loan Comparison that is lower than the banks? marketed rates. Established by Mitch Fraser, an internet developer, and John Allen, whose background is in finance and property, Tomorrow Finance has come into being at a time when the banks are going through elevated credit score costs. ?Despite their giant earnings the banks are being squeezed,? says Mr Allen. ?When that occurs they have little possibility however to move these prices on to the borrowers resulting in higher interest rates. ?On the similar time most want to keep a healthy mortgage e book so they are searching for new business. If we are able to deliver customers to them at a cheaper cost then they can go on these savings. It?s a win-win for everyone.? Before the World Financial Crisis there was a proliferation of non-bank lenders but right this moment around eighty per cent of residence loans are being written by the most important banks. ?5 or 10 years ago there have been dozens of lenders to choose from and the brokers were properly-placed to navigate the best way for debtors via these multiple options,? says Mr Allen. ?But at this time it?s all in regards to the banks and making an attempt to get the best possible deal from them. ?We?ve been in a position to negotiate a mortgage fee that is as much as 0.5 per cent lower than the big banks? advertised rates. Rates of interest go up and down but this mortgage will stay at a relentless discount to the already discounted charges obtainable by way of Tomorrow Finance. ?Relying on the dimensions and term of the loan, that may mean a saving of 1000?s of dollars.? Mr Fraser and Mr Allen established Tomorrow Finance after promising to hunt out the very best mortgage price for associates ? and discovering there was a much wider demand for their service. ?Now we have no direct contact with the client, so there is no such thing as a incentive for us to direct a potential consumer to a specific loan or lender,? says Mr Allen. ?This is a vital consider protecting the enterprise honest. And since every part is carried out on-line, we can preserve our commissions low.

Pennsylvanians give Corbett low marks on Sandusky probe: poll

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Most Pennsylvania voters give Governor Tom Corbett less than stellar marks for his investigation, as state attorney general, of reports Jerry Sandusky was sexually abusing children, a poll showed on Wednesday.

Only 17 percent of the state's voters think Corbett, who served as Pennsylvania's top prosecutor for two terms before becoming governor in 2011, did a good or excellent job investigating what later erupted as a scandal at Penn State University, according to the Franklin & Marshall College Poll.

Some 65 percent said Corbett did a fair or poor job on the case which led to the conviction in June of Sandusky, a former assistant football coach at Penn State, for sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years.

G. Terry Madonna, the poll director, said three factors led to the low approval rating: a sense Corbett did not move the grand jury investigation fast enough, a sense he did not put enough manpower on the probe, and questions about Corbett's role later filling a seat on Penn State's board of trustees that is set aside for the governor.

"There is some residual fallout," said Madonna. "The prospects that this will be over any time soon are not very good."

Kevin Harley, Corbett's press secretary, defended the governor's record on the Sandusky case.

"I would say the verdict of 45 (convictions) on 48 counts is a complete vindication of the thoroughness of the investigation," Harley said.

The scandal will dominate headlines in coming months. Sandusky is scheduled for sentencing on October 9 when Victim 5 will testify according to local media. A series of civil lawsuits is expected to be filed by victims.

In January, two former Penn State officials face trial on charges they lied to a grand jury about the crime. A separate report criticized school leaders for staging a coverup to avoid bad publicity.

Madonna said he doubted that widely published reports that Corbett received campaign contributions totaling some $647,000 from people associated with Sandusky's now defunct charity, The Second Mile, had much to do with the dim poll results.

"Most people don't know that," Madonna said.

Harley, said the donation total was vastly inflated in media reports, putting it closer to $40,000.

"Completely, completely, completely false," said Madonna, noting the higher total included contributions from people only distantly linked to Second Mile, the charity for at-risk youth that prosecutors said Sandusky used to find victims.

The telephone poll of 632 Pennsylvania voters, conducted September 18-23, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percent.

The hippocampus represents an important brain structure for learning. Scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich discovered how it filters electrical neuronal signals through an input and output control, thus regulating learning and memory processes. Accordingly, effective signal transmission needs so-called theta-frequency impulses of the cerebral cortex. With a frequency of three to eight hertz, these impulses generate waves of electrical activity that propagate through the hippocampus. Impulses of a different frequency evoke no transmission, or only a much weaker one. Moreover, signal transmission in other areas of the brain through long-term potentiation (LTP), which is essential for learning, occurs only when the activity waves take place for a certain while. The scientists even have an explanation for why we are mentally more productive after drinking a cup of coffee or in an acute stress situation: in their experiments, caffeine and the stress hormone corticosterone boosted the activity flow.

When we learn and recall something, we have to concentrate on the relevant information and experience it again and again. Electrophysiological experiments in mice now show why this is the case. Scientists belonging to Matthias Eders Research Group measured the transmission of electrical impulses between neurons in the mouse hippocampus. Under the fluorescence microscope, they were able to observe in real time how the neurons forward signals.

Jens Stepan, a junior scientist at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich, stimulated the input region of the hippocampus the first time that specifically theta-frequency stimulations produce an effective impulse transmission across the hippocampal CA3/CA1 region. This finding is very important, as it is known from previous studies that theta-rhythmical neuronal activity in the entorhinal cortex always occurs when new information is taken up in a focused manner. With this finding, the researchers demonstrate that the hippocampus highly selectively reacts to the entorhinal signals. Obviously, it can distinguish important and, thus, potentially recollection-worth information from unimportant one and process it in a physiologically specific manner.

One possible reaction is the formation of the so-called long-term potentiation (LTP) of signal transmission at CA3-CA1 synapses, which is often essential for learning and memory. The present study documents that this CA1-LTP occurs only when the activity waves through the hippocampus take place for a certain time. Translating this to our learning behavior, to commit for instance an image to memory, we should intently view it for a while, as only then we produce the activity waves described long enough to store the image in our brain.

With this study, Matthias Eder and colleagues succeeded in closing a knowledge gap. "Our investigation on neuronal communication via the hippocampal trisynaptic circuit provides us with a new understanding of learning in the living organism. We are the first to show that long-term potentiation depends on the frequency and persistency of incoming sensory signals in the hippocampus," says Matthias Eder.

Newbies Surfing - 5 Tips For Choosing The Right Board

Surfing is enjoying a surge of popularity today because many individuals are attracted to the beach lifestyle as well as the sport itself. When people first start out one of the most important things they are going to need is a surfboard. There is a huge difference between surfboards designed for experienced surfers and surfboards for beginners. In this post we'll give newbies tips on how to pick out the right surfboard.

1. Choosing The Ideal Material

There are three basic methods which are used to make surfboards. One inexpensive way to make surfboards is to carve them out of a piece of foam. This kind of board is usually called a foamy and they are excellent options for newbies due to their stability and buoyancy. Pop out manufacturing is the second way that surfboards can be made. Surfboard of this sort have a thick layer of fiberglass on the exterior while the core is made out of foam. Pop outs are made on an assembly line, hence their name. They are the heaviest of all types of surfboards. Therefore they offer good stability on water but when a surfer gets hit by one, it might hurt him very badly. Pop outs usually have quite good performance so they can be used for a longer time as people improve their skills. There is a big secondhand market in these boards and they are inexpensive to purchase new too. Custom boards are not suitable for beginners.

2. Size and Shape

The length and shape of the surfboard are important to beginner surfers as they dictate how the board will behave. A surfboard which is thick and long will offer good buoyancy and stability over the water. These are the characteristics which suit newbie surfers well however are not suited for experts. Pop out boards should measure about three feet longer than the beginner surfer. Length is less important in foam boards but a general suggestion for newbies is six feet for kids and eight feet for adults.

3. Surfboard Rental

It is a good idea for newbies to rent a surfboard because these are readily available for rent in most surf board shops and surf schools. Renting might be a good idea for the first few times until an individual is sure that they want to continue in the sport. Renting also gives new surfers an opportunity to test different kinds of surfboards so they could decide on what type suits them best before buying one.

4. New or Secondhand

It won't be a surprise to you to learn that new surfboards are costlier than second-user ones. You can easily find a good beginner surfboard from a used surfboard market. Shop around at local surf spots or on the web.

5. Surfboard Accessories

Surfboard is the basic equipment which beginner surfers require but having a few other accessories might make the learning experience safe and enjoyable. Surf wax is applied on all boards with the exception of foamies to give your feet better traction over the slippery surface of the board. To keep you connected with the surfboard at times of wipeouts you may need a leash. The length of the leash should be same as that of the surfboard. Sporting a wetsuit is suggested if you are surfing in cool waters.

Actress Bonnie Franklin diagnosed with pancreatic cancer

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actress Bonnie Franklin, who starred as the harried single mother of two teenage girls on the 1970s and '80s television comedy "One Day at a Time," is being treated for pancreatic cancer, her family said in a statement on Monday.

Franklin, 68, a petite redhead, is best known for her role as divorcee Ann Romano on the show, which debuted in December 1975 and ran for nine seasons on CBS. It co-starred Valerie Bertinelli and Mackenzie Phillips as her two head-strong daughters.

The show followed their day-to-day lives as she and the girls made a new start in an Indianapolis apartment, befriended by the building superintendent, Schneider, who becomes virtually part of their family.

Franklin previously earned a Theatre World Award and a Tony nomination for her work in the 1970 Broadway musical "Applause." She was nominated for an Emmy in 1982 for her performance on "One Day at a Time."

The brief statement from her family, circulated by CBS, said was being treated for pancreatic cancer and was "continuing her normal schedule during this time."

"She and her family remain extremely positive and thank everyone for their support and concern," the statement said, concluding with a request that her privacy be respected.

Franklin earlier this year appeared on the daytime drama "The Young and the Restless" and last year made a guest appearance on the on TV Land cable channel's sitcom "Hot in Cleveland," co-starring Bertinelli.

Beware the latest Apex Launcher update

Apex Launcher

Just a quick heads up that it appears the update made available this morning for Apex Launcher is borking things up, from consistent force-closes to stealing babies from their cribs.

Deep breath, folks. We're sure it'll get fixed soonest. At least it better. In the meantime, we'd avoid this update. And we'll update this post just as soon as the update is updated to fix the update that broke things in the first place.

Green Day frontman checks into rehab

Eric Reed / AP

By Brandi Fowler, E! Online

Billie Joe Armstrong has checked into rehab just two days after his onstage meltdown at the iHeartRadio music festival Friday.

"Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong is seeking treatment for substance abuse," his rep told E! News Sunday. "Green Day would like everyone to know that their set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those they offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas. The band regretfully must postpone some of their upcoming promotional appearances."

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong returns to Los Angeles after being hospitalized in Italy

The 40-year-old rocker went on a profanity-laden rant on Friday, flipping off the camera and smashing his guitar after the band's set was supposedly cut short to give more performance time to Usher and Rihanna.

Upon noticing a one-minute warning sign in the back of the arena, Armstrong stopped singing. "You've gotta be f--king kidding me! You're f--king kidding me. What the f--k! I'm not f--king Justin Bieber, you motherf--kers," he yelled. "I got one minute--one minute left."

The musician was previously hospitalized in Italy at the beginning of September for an undisclosed illness.

Nigeria military says kills 35 Boko Haram Islamists

ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigeria's military said on Monday it killed 35 members of the Islamist sect Boko Haram and arrested several during an overnight gunbattle in Damaturu, capital of northeastern Yobe state.

Boko Haram, which wants to carve out an Islamic state in northern Nigeria, has been blamed for more than 1,000 deaths since its insurgency intensified in 2010. The United States has designated three of Boko Haram's senior members as terrorists.

"The operation which lasted throughout Sunday night and continued into the early hours of Monday recorded fierce exchanges of fire between Joint Task Force (JTF) troops and the terrorists," said a statement from JTF spokesman Eli Lazarus.

"Thirty-five terrorists were killed in the fight while several others were arrested ... two JTF men were injured," said Lazarus.

Nigeria's military has been accused of using heavy-handed tactics in the past and previous operations targeting Boko Haram have resulted in civilian deaths.

Lazarus said the JTF had lifted 24-hour curfews imposed on Damaturu and the nearby town of Potiskum, both scenes of several deadly Boko Haram attacks this year.

A military crackdown appears to have weakened Boko Haram, whose militants have not reproduced the kind of large-scale, coordinated attacks they carried out earlier this year. At least 186 people were killed in the city of Kano during a wave of coordinated bomb and gun attacks over two days in January.

But almost daily shootings and bombings blamed on the Islamists have continued.

A suicide car bomber blew himself up outside a Catholic church in northern Nigeria on Sunday, killing at least two people and wounding 46, police said. Boko Haram has targeted churches in attacks.

The militants have made no public statement since government forces said they killed the sect's spokesman Abu Qaqa in a gunbattle in Kano on September 16.

Security analysts say Boko Haram has forged links with other jihadist movements expanding across West Africa like al-Qaeda in the Islamic Magreb, a group formed in Algeria and now based in northern Mali.

But apart from an attack on the U.N. headquarters in the Nigerian capital Abuja last August, Boko Haram's focus has been mainly on local targets. (Reporting by Isaac Abrak; Writing by Joe Brock; Editing by Ralph Gowling)

Nine killed in Nepal avalanche

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - An avalanche swept away climbers and their camps on the world's eighth highest mountain in northwestern Nepal on Sunday, killing at least nine climbers, with another four missing, police said.

Five climbers were rescued.

Police inspector Basant Mishra said the bodies of a German climber and a Nepali guide were recovered from the snow on the 8,163-metre (26,781-foot) Mount Manaslu, about 100 km (60 miles) northwest of Kathmandu.

"Rescue pilots have spotted seven other bodies on the mountain," Mishra said. At least five injured people had been rescued by helicopters and flown to Kathmandu, he said.

The accident took place at 7,000 meters (22,950 feet), making it difficult for land rescue teams to reach.

Helicopters were dispatched to the remote area to look for those missing after the early morning accident, but cloud and fog were complicating rescue efforts, Mishra said.

Details of the avalanche and the nationality of the missing climbers were not clear.

Hundreds of foreign climbers flock every year to Himalayan peaks in Nepal, which has eight of the world's 14 highest mountains, including Mount Everest. September marks the beginning of the autumn climbing season which runs through November.

In the last major accident in the area, at least 42 people including 17 foreigners, were killed in heavy snowfall in the Mount Everest region in 1995.

Central Pennsylvania Real Estate: Green Urban Initiative; Urban ...

Click here for previous posts on urban farming?and here for a past story on urban farming on multiple lots in Harrisburg City.?

From Fox43 comes the story of?Green Urban Initiative, an urban farming organization that leases and operates multiple lots in Harrisburg.? On Wednesday, the City demolished one of?GUI's lots at 6th and Curtin streets due to allegations that the property had fallen into disrepair and was being used to hide contraband, an allegation that?GUI disputes.?

Additional details have been reported on Pennlive.? GUI's website can be found here.

What is most significant about this story goes beyond the demolition of this one garden.? We are not talking about your average backyard vegetable garden with only a handful of various plants. Gardens of this type often encompass entire vacant lots - or even multiple contiguous lots.

GUI operates "multiple gardens throughout the City," according to the Fox-43 story.? GUI apparently leases vacant lots from the City for this purpose.? This practice provides further indication that gardening provides a more profitable use of certain vacant urban lots than traditional residential or commercial uses. That gardening is more profitable reflects not only increased prices in food and farm products, but also many obstacles to land development and investment, such as increased lending restrictions, real estate taxes, municipal regulations and fees, title defects due to prior tax sales and urban crime.? The demolished lot in this case was located in a high crime area. All of those obstacles, while preventing building, repair or other development, would not interfere?with gardening on land leased from the City.

In some cities outside of Pennsylvania, the possibility of increased urban farming has played a key factor in municipal plans for urban?consolidation and population relocation.?

However as it is rare that they have to be put into practice, it is common for even experienced sailors to be out of date on the latest techniques
You won't be surprised to learn that most sea-goers have some knowledge of emergency procedures and many even have taken exams. However as it is rare that they have to be put into practice, it is common for even experienced sailors to be out of date on the latest techniques. It's certainly worth taking some time to brush up your knowledge.

DSC (digital selective calling)

If you have VHF radio with DSC, you should first send a distress signal by activating the distress button. All DSC-equipped vessels and Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centres (MRCCs) in the area will automatically receive details about your vessel and position and you can include information about your problem. Make sure that your DSC is connected to a GPS (Global Positioning System), otherwise you'll give an incorrect position unless you make regular manual positioning updates. The alert will be repeated every four minutes until it's acknowledged. All MRCCs in the UK and most European coastguards are equipped with VHF DSC and they will respond quickly when called. You should then follow it up with a voice Mayday message on channel 16. If you accept assistance from another boat you should inform the coastguard and stop the DSC alert.

Mayday Calls

The word "Mayday" derives from the French "venez m'aider" meaning "help me" or "come to my aid".

A Mayday is a situation in which a vessel or person is in grave or imminent danger and needs immediate assistance. Examples include sinking, explosion, fire, piracy, man-overboard and serious life threatening personal injury.

Mayday calls are equivalent to a Morse SOS code or a telephone call to emergency services and can be made on any frequency, but it is normal to broadcast on VHF radio channel 16 as this is the calling, listening and recognised emergency channel. The Coastguard monitor Channel 16 and the VHF signal operates roughly within 30 miles of the nearest shore depending on radio propagation. When a Mayday distress call has been made onChannel 16, it imposes general radio silence on the channel, except for those assisting with the Mayday, until the emergency is over.

A hoax Mayday call is regarded as a criminal act in many countries, putting rescuers' lives in danger, causing a huge waste of money and time and potentially stopping search and rescue teams from attending genuine emergencies elsewhere. For example, in the USA, a false distress call carries a penalty of up to 6 years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000.

Remember that although in normal circumstances you need to have passed an exam to obtain a VHF radio licence before you can legally broadcast on VHF radio, anyone may use the VHF to summon help in an emergency.

How to make a Mayday call

The word "Mayday" is spoken three times, followed by the vessel's name or call sign spoken three times, then "Mayday" again and the name or call sign. You must then give vital information including position, type of emergency and number of people on board. A typical Mayday call might be:-

- Mayday, Mayday, Mayday

- This is My-yacht, My-yacht, My-yacht (call sign)

- Position 55? 50'5 North 004? 57'4 West.

- My vessel is holed and sinking

- I requireimmediate assistance

- 5 people on board, one badly injured

- Mayday, My-yacht, Over

Mayday Relay

A Mayday Relay call is made by a vessel on behalf of a different vessel in distress. If a Mayday call is not acknowledged by the coastguard after one repetition and a 2 minute wait, then any vessel who has received the Mayday call should try to contact the coastguard on behalf of the distressed vessel by broadcasting a Mayday Relay. This should use the call sign or name of the transmitting vessel but give the position of the Mayday vessel. It can be used when the vessel in distress is either too far offshore to contact the coastguard direct or is without radio capabilities. A typical Mayday Relay might be:-

- Mayday Relay, Mayday Relay, Mayday Relay

- This is My-yacht, My-yacht, My-yacht (call sign)

- The following distress call was received from yacht Hopeful at 14.35 hours.

- Mayday, Mayday, Mayday

- This is Hopeful, Hopeful, Hopeful (call sign)

- Position49? 44'5 North 001? 25'5 West

- We are on fire and sinking

- 3 people on board, one with burn injuries

- We are taking to the life raft

- Mayday, Hopeful, Over

- Message ends

- This is Yacht My-yacht out

Pan-Pan

A Pan-Pan is used to signify that there is a state of urgency on board, but no immediate danger to life or to the vessel. It informs the emergency services and other craft that the vessel requires assistance but is not in grave or imminent danger. The French word "panne" refers to mechanical failure or breakdown of some kind.

Calling procedure is similar to that of a Mayday, substituting the word "Pan-Pan" for "Mayday", followed by the relevant information about the vessel, position and nature of problem. If the problem is resolved, the emergency services and other craft in the area should be notified. Don't forget a Pan-Pan call can be upgraded to a Mayday if the situation deteriorates to the point of "grave and imminent danger". A Pan-Pan has priority over all other radio traffic except for Maydays, but after obtaining a response to your Pan-Pan you should make arrangements to transfer to another channel, leaving channel 16 free for emergencies.

Mobile Phone

You can use your mobile phone to dial 999/112 and ask for the Coastguard, but it should not be relied on because the signal is very limited and it will not alert other vessels.

Flares

You can fire a red parachute flare or a red hand-held flare at night in an emergency, or use orange smoke in daytime. They should not, however, be relied upon to raise an alert, as they need someone else to notice them, recognise what they mean and then get help.

What response will you get to an emergency call?

When the coastguard receives a distress call he will acknowledge it and respond, probably asking for more information. The coastguard will then decide how to deal with the situation, possibly sending lifeboats, search and rescue helicopters or coastguard rescue teams. He may also contact other vessels in your area, asking them to assist. It is a legal requirement for other vessels to help if they are able, whether contacted by the coastguard, or if they hear the mayday and are in close proximity.Whatever help the coastguards provide, they will guide you through the rescue procedure. If you have to take to the life-raft after making a Mayday call, do remember to inform the authorities so they know about your change of situation.

What if you receive a distress signal?

Any vessel receiving a distress signal or seeing a boat in distress in their area must respond to it as best they can, as long as they do not endanger their boat or their crew.

How can you help yourselves?

- Stay calm, especially if you are in charge.

- Ensure your radio is always switched on while at sea and tuned to channel 16.

- Keep your call sign, name (in phonetic alphabet) and list of distress procedures near the radio and practice the phonetic alphabet.

- Speak clearly and slowly, splitting numbers, for example "one-six" instead of "sixteen".

- Make sure that all your crew know how to operate the radio even if they haven't got a licence and that they know the emergency call procedures.

- If possible keep one person on standby on the radio for as long as is safely possible.

- While waiting for a response to your Mayday call - prepare flares, life rafts, life jackets, gather emergency supplies, hand held radios and grab-bags as long as it is safe to do so. Ideally each member of the crew should have their own personal grab-bag containing money, credit card, passport, mobile phone, etc.

- Get yourself and the crew into the safest place on your vessel, checking that they are all OK. Don't forget a crew member obliviously sleeping below decks. Remind yourself and crew about how to launch the life raft in case the worst happens. Remember though, only to get into the life raft as a very last resort?..you should only ever step up into a life raft (that is - only if your vessel is sinking) unless it is on fire or there is danger of explosion.

Most people sail the seas happily for years without ever experiencing an emergency, but it is worth remembering that emergencies happen without warning or sometimes even without a logical reason. The time might come when you are unlucky - so be prepared. It doesn't take much time to review emergency procedures and relay them to your crew - and it could easily mean the difference between life and death.
