Iranian guessing game: Ahmadinejad's next move

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Mock condolences arriving by text message in Iran announce the political "death" of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Memorial services, the joke continues, are planned at the United Nations in tribute to his swaggering style each year in New York.

The satire may bring smirks from the many foes Ahmadinejad has racked up over eight years in office, stemming from several high-profile feuds with the ruling clerics and one disputed re-election. But no one is truly counting Ahmadinejad out of Iran's political future, which could face some bumpy times as he decides his next moves and his opponents plot possible payback.

One way or another, the combative and polarizing aura of the soon-to-be former president is not going to dissipate once his centrist successor, Hasan Rouhani, is sworn in Aug. 4.

Ahmadinejad has remained evasive on his post-presidential plans. Speculation, however, is fanning out in several directions, including media boss and freelance statesman. A trip to Iraq this week ? one of his last major moments in the spotlight as president ? will be watched closely for clues on his next moves.

"The only thing that's certain at this point is that Ahmadinejad and his team are just not going to pack up and go away," said Rasool Nafisi, an Iranian affairs analyst at Strayer University in Virginia. "Iran's political system has to be prepared for that."

This is what makes Ahmadinejad's departure such a potential shock to Iran's system.

Since turbulent shakeouts immediately after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran's other former presidents have remained rooted in the system. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who left the presidency in 1989, rose to become supreme leader. His successor, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, took posts within the ruling clerics. Even reformist Mohammad Khatami was careful not to fight back too hard over sweeping crackdowns on the opposition and some of the freedoms he helped engineer.

But Ahmadinejad is the kind of high-profile figure Iran has rarely seen before: He has essentially become a political orphan.

The ruling establishment holds a powerful grudge over his maverick-style challenges to Khamenei's authority to set policies and pick key Cabinet posts, which left Ahmadinejad severely weakened in recent years. Liberals long ago rejected Ahmadinejad's firebrand ways, which included anti-Israeli diatribes and questions over the Holocaust that also hammered his image in the West. And many former conservative backers drifted away when it became a loyalty test or either Ahmadinejad or the supreme leader.

This leaves Ahmadinejad with a small cadre of allies and pockets of supporters around the country ? mainly poor and rural Iranians grateful for his government's monthly handouts.

How he may leverage this remaining clout "is very difficult to predict," said Ali Bigdeli, a professor in international relations in Tehran's Beheshti University.

One intriguing hint was given last week by his closest aide, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei, who said it was "likely" Ahmadinejad could launch a media outlet.

"We are not considering formation of a political party," said Mashaei, who was barred by the ruling clerics from the ballot in June's election as part of the high-level fallout against Ahmadinejad. "But the media can be effective. The society needs media."

He gave no other clues, but any media venture would certainly meet stiff resistance from the ruling theocracy and the powerful Revolutionary Guard, which hold influence over a host of news services, TV stations and newspapers.

"Ahmadinejad is very interested remaining in the media spotlight," said Hamid Reza Shokouhi, editor of the pro-reform Mardomsalari daily. "He will use it as a tool to return him or any close ally to power."

Some pro-Ahmadinejad sources also have floated the idea he would establish an aid-giving foundation known as "Bahar," or "Spring," as a way to maintain his populist image and keep alive options for a comeback bid in 2017. Iran's presidents must leave office after two consecutive terms, but it's possible to return after a political hiatus ? as Rafsanjani tried in 2005 in his surprise loss to Ahmadinejad.

Ahmadinejad, meanwhile, has not slowed down even as Rouhani prepares to take over. He has kept up a steady pace of speeches, ribbon-cuttings and trips. It suggests he wants to keep his statesman image sharp for possible independent outreach and attempts at keeping a voice in Iranian affairs.

On Thursday, Ahmadinejad plans to begin a two-day trip to neighboring Iraq, where Shiite power Iran carries important influence with the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. He also is scheduled to visit the Shiite religious center of Najaf, an important power base and source of potential funds for Ahmadinejad.

Yet other challenges await Ahmadinejad once he leaves office.

In early June, a criminal court summoned Ahmadinejad over a lawsuit filed by the country's parliament speaker and a parliamentary committee. There have been no further details, but Ahmadinejad and the speaker, Ali Larijani, have waged political feuds for years. In February, Ahmadinejad released a barely audible video that purported to show discussion over bribes that included Larijani's brother.

Behrouz Shojaei, a columnist in several pro-reform newspapers, believes more legal salvos over his presidency may come as "indirect punishment" for battling the supreme leader.

"However much Ahmadinejad may resist, though, there is the reality that he will no longer be president and the world's attention will shift to his successor," said the professor, Nafisi. "It began happening the moment Rouhani was elected."

When Ahmadinejad returned earlier this month from a trip to Moscow, only a small group of supporters came to Tehran's airport to welcome him. In the past, hundreds of people often crowded similar arrivals home.

Meanwhile, Rouhani has been embraced by Iran's fast-moving street culture in ways never open to Ahmadinejad.

The phrase "Rouhani, mochakerim," or "Thank you, Rouhani," has become a catchall term for hope, achievements and complaints about Iran's sanctions-shattered economy. It's also a backhanded way for Ahmadinejad's opponents to bid him goodbye.

The quip first surfaced just days after the June 14 election when Iran's soccer team qualified for the 2014 World Cup after beating South Korea. It then went viral on Farsi websites.

This month, a hip-hop audio clip carried the refrain "Rouhani, mochakerim." The Tehran weekly, Hamshahri Javan, printed many of the Internet messages in graffiti style on its front page. One pointed out the major economic challenges ahead: "Inflation declined to zero, Rouhani, mochakerim." On Sunday, Iran's Central Bank put the inflation rate at nearly 36 percent.

Later, one blog post tried to put some perspective on the transition from Ahmadinejad to Rouhani.

"We ask Rouhani to explain to the people that he is a president," it said, "not Harry Potter."

WASHINGTON ? The federal appeals court in Washington on Tuesday set Sept. 9 as the date for oral arguments in the so-called net neutrality case that could be seminal for federal regulation of Internet traffic.

The highly anticipated hearings, originally expected to take place this past spring, will pit Verizon Communications against the Federal Communications Commission as the biggest U.S. wireless provider challenges the FCC's order that guides how Internet service providers manage their networks.

The ruling of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit will have major implications for the increasingly partisan debate over the degree of regulatory power possessed by the federal communications agency.

Net neutrality is the principle that Internet users should be able to access any Web content and use any applications they choose, without restrictions or varying charges imposed by the Internet service provider or the government.

Judges Judith Rogers, Laurence Silberman and David Tatel will hear the arguments in the case, according to the order issued on Tuesday.

The FCC's 2011 open Internet rules require Internet providers to treat all Web traffic equally and give consumers equal access to all lawful content, even if, for instance, it comes from a competitor or disagrees with their political views.

Verizon and other critics argue that the FCC's rules are an unwarranted government intrusion into regulating the Internet, including which content consumers may access and which companies may provide that content, and should be thrown out.

Public interest groups have criticized the rules as too weak, saying the FCC was swayed by big industry players. Democrats on Capitol Hill have said they would push against the court's decision if it sides with Verizon.

The FCC's position in the case received a boost from the Supreme Court in May, when in a separate case it ruled in favor of giving regulatory agencies deference in interpreting the extent of their own regulatory authority.

The case is Verizon v. FCC, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, case No. 11-1355 (and consolidated cases).

Israel's Netanyahu says Iran closer to nuclear 'red line'

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Iran was getting closer to the "red line" he set for its nuclear program and warned the international community not to be distracted by the crises in Syria and Egypt.

Tehran was continuing enrichment activities and building inter-continental ballistic missiles, which could give it a military nuclear capability, he said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

At the United Nations in September, Netanyahu drew a red line across a cartoon bomb to illustrate the point at which Iran will have amassed enough uranium to fuel one nuclear bomb. He said Iran could reach that threshold by mid-2013.

"They haven't yet reached it but they're getting closer to it and they have to be stopped," Netanyahu told CBS. He said the West's sanctions against Tehran needed to be intensified and backed up with the threat of a credible military option.

Netanyahu also said Iran was building faster centrifuges that could allow it to speed up its enrichment activities.

Israel, widely believed to be the Middle East's only nuclear-armed power, has issued veiled warnings for years that it might attack Iran if international sanctions and diplomacy fail to curb Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

Israel has long insisted on the need for a convincing military threat and setting clear lines beyond which Iran's nuclear activity should not advance.

"I think it's important to note that we (Israel) can't allow it to happen. Our clocks are ticking at a different pace. We're closer than the United States, we're more vulnerable, and therefore we'll have to address this question of whether to stop Iran before the United States does," Netanyahu said.

The Israeli prime minister said he was concerned that the military conflict in Syria and the political crisis in Egypt had pushed the Iran nuclear issue lower on the international agenda.

"There are many important issues that we have to deal with and I have a sense that there is no sense of urgency on Iran and yet Iran is the most important and the most urgent matter of all," he said.

Police injured, 11 arrests in Northern Ireland Orange clashes

By Ian Graham

BELFAST (Reuters) - More than 30 police officers were injured and 11 people arrested during overnight violence around traditional Orange Day parades in Northern Ireland, authorities said on Saturday.

Thousands of pro-British Protestants march every summer in the British province, a regular flashpoint for sectarian violence as Catholics, many of whom favor unification with Ireland, see the parades as a provocation.

Violence between the two religious groups still sometimes flares since a peace deal was signed in 1998, which largely ended three decades of trouble. Much of Belfast remains divided along religious and nationalist lines.

A total 32 police were injured in what Chief Constable Matt Baggott described as "shocking and disgraceful" violence, including head, eye and leg wounds. Another 400 reinforcements were being brought in from Britain.

Tens of thousands of Orange Order marchers, wearing orange sashes and waving British flags, paraded at more than a dozen venues across Northern Ireland on Friday to mark the 1690 victory at the Battle of the Boyne by Protestant Prince William of Orange over Catholic King James of England.

The Orange Order was angered this year when authorities ruled they could not walk along a stretch of road that divides the two communities, a flashpoint for trouble in the past.

"I think that this morning some of the leadership of the Orange Order need to reflect upon whether they provided the responsible leadership asked for by myself and the party leaders," Baggott told a news conference.

Calm had returned on Saturday and the Orange Order said it was "suspending protest action" over the ruling, after it had previously said it would continue over the weekend.

Overnight, rioters had thrown petrol bombs, bricks, bottles and fireworks at police, who responded with plastic bullets and water cannon.

Nigel Dodds, a lawmaker representing North Belfast in Britain's Parliament, was released from hospital after he was hit on the head by a missile, said his party colleague Nelson McCausland.

Heavy Rains Send Iowa's Precious Soil Downriver

What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time, the Midwest was heading into one of the worst droughts in decades. Now much of the region is soggy.

But the biggest loser from this year's heavy rains? The land itself.

The Environmental Working Group, drawing on analysis done by Iowa State University's Iowa Daily Erosion Project, found in a recent report that during one five-day period in May, 50 townships in Iowa lost more than 5 tons of topsoil per acre.

As EWG puts it: "Those 1.2 million acres of farmland may have lost more precious topsoil in five days than what is tolerable over an entire year." The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service considers an annual rate of topsoil loss of five tons "tolerable," but EWG says "a truly sustainable rate of erosion is far lower."

As Abbie Fentress Swanson reported last week, the lost topsoil contains a huge amount of nutrients, like nitrogen and phosphorus, that are essential for growing crops. Once they enter rivers, lakes and bays, they can trigger algal growth.

Several members of EWG's Iowa-based staff took a road tour of the damage. You can browse photos they took along the way on an interactive map.

According to EWG, much of the soil loss could be prevented through more aggressive soil-conservation practices, including "no-till" planting, grass waterways and terraces. "Every no-till field with properly placed grass waterways showed only nominal signs of erosion," says the report. "Well-protected fields suffered little damage even where poorly protected fields just down or across the road had suffered badly."

App Store Fifth Anniversary: How Jordan Joined The Press - 148Apps

Video game journalism is serious business, for me at least.

?

When talking about the impact Apple?s App Store has had on people during the last five years it?s easy to just rattle off the numbers. But its influence goes beyond the hundreds of thousands of apps and the billions of downloads. Technology can simultaneously change the lives of entire populations and lowly individuals, individuals like me. The App Store has opened up opportunities for me to do the things I?ve always wanted to do, all while making me better at it.

For as long as I can remember, I?ve had a passion for writing and a passion for video games. Naturally, video game journalism seemed like the best career to pursue because it allowed me to easily combine the two. In 2007, just as I was settling into high school, I started practicing my craft on tiny fan sites about big games most players had already made up their minds about.

In 2009, though, as App Store games and the sites that covered them were coming into their own, I saw the chance to really get serious about this strange path I was on. With so many games to choose from, players were actually in need of advice. App Store coverage was a growing segment of games journalism that could really help people, so it seemed as good a place as any to launch my career. From 2009 to 2010 I wrote for SlidetoPlay.com and in 2011 I made the jump here to 148Apps. Writing about the App Store these past four years has undoubtedly driven me to strengthen my writing and provide quality analysis, although there are definitely improvements still to be made. I?m incredibly grateful for the editors who have had faith in me and my work.

Reviewing over 150 games for 148Apps alone has also given me a greater understanding of video games as a whole. At least, I?d like to think so. Playing all of the different kinds of games on the platform, no matter how good, bad or crazy experimental, while trying to articulate how and why they do or don?t work has been an immensely beneficial intellectual endeavor. Video game criticism has the potential to be more than just simple purchasing advice. Like games themselves, the writing can become a true art form. As the App Store evolves, its role in gaming is increasing. By highlighting these smaller App Store games I?m hoping to make whatever tiny contribution I can to the larger field. These games can be reviewed on their own terms, without worrying about having to conform to some AAA gaming consensus or fandom pressure and that?s what makes them so special.

Of course, what also make the App Store so special are the people behind it. To get a better understanding of the industry, I?ve recently been trying to talk with more developers and other members of the press. Before leaving Chicago and coming back home for the summer, I had dinner with Tom Eastman of Trinket Studios, creators of Color Sheep, and drinks with 148Apps? own Carter Dotson in the same week. Both experiences were great. The App Store itself may just be a cold, technological service set up by a massive corporation, but the communities of developers and writers that have come together because of it more than proves its value.

At just five years old, though, the App Store still has a bright future ahead of it. As I prepare to enter my last year of journalism school, I can?t wait to see what that future is and start covering it as a true professional. Writing about games is important to me and that?s not changing any time soon. So thank you App Store, 148Apps, and the wonderful people behind them both for helping me make my insanely frivolous dream an insanely meaningful reality.

US 'very disappointed' with China on Snowden

The United States told China it was upset it did not hand over US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden after he fled to Hong Kong, saying that the decision had undermined relations.

President Barack Obama, meeting senior Chinese officials who were in Washington for annual wide-ranging talks, "expressed his disappointment and concern" over the Snowden case, the White House said in a statement Thursday.

Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, one of the main US officials in the talks, said Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed at their summit last month at the California resort of Sunnylands to cooperate over problems.

"That is why we were very disappointed with how the authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong handled the Snowden case, which undermined our effort to build the trust needed to manage difficult issues," Burns said.

"We have made clear that China's handling of this case was not consistent with the spirit of Sunnylands or with the type of relationship -- the new model -- that we both seek to build," Burns said at a joint press event.

Snowden, a former government contractor, fled the United States for Hong Kong after revealing details of pervasive US intelligence surveillance on the Internet. The United States sought his extradition to face charges.

But Snowden was allowed to leave Hong Kong, a territory of China that enjoys a large amount of autonomy, for Russia.

Since arriving in Russia on June 23, Snowden has been stuck in the transit zone of Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport as he seeks a way to get to a country that will offer him asylum.

State Councilor Yang Jiechi, speaking next to Burns, defended decisions on Snowden, whose allegations of US snooping in Chinese Internet networks caused a stir in Beijing.

"The central government of China has always respected the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government's handling of cases in accordance with the law," he said.

Hong Kong "handled the Snowden case in accordance with the law and its approach is beyond reproach", said Yang, a central figure in Chinese foreign policy.

Beijing's foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying reiterated Yang's comments at a regular briefing Friday and told reporters: "The SAR government's handling of the Snowden case according to law is beyond reproach and all parties should respect that." SAR refers to Hong Kong.

"The Americans are just trying to save face," said Hong Kong pro-democracy lawmaker Claudia Mo, dismissing the rebuke from Washington as "diplomatic talk".

"The Chinese didn't exactly invite Snowden to come to Hong Kong," Mo told AFP.

Hong Kong executive council member Bernard Chan was also critical of Washington, saying "Hong Kong and China were not the ones at fault".

"It was the US, not Hong Kong, that decided to operate a global electronic spying operation, which even some Americans now believe is out of control," Chan wrote in the South China Morning Post.

"It was the US, not Hong Kong, that decided directly or via outsourcing to use the services of a young man who turned out to be disloyal."

Earlier Thursday, Russia's Interfax news agency said the US had stopped pressing Russia to extradite Snowden, quoting a source close to the situation.

"There has not been any request either through official or unofficial channels for several days now," the source told the agency.

Snowden has applied for asylum in 27 countries.

Although many of them have already turned down his request, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro offered "humanitarian asylum" to Snowden last week.

But the country's foreign Minister Elias Jaua told AFP on Thursday that Snowden had yet to accept his country's offer.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Mercosur trade bloc summit in Montevideo, he said his government had had no contact with Snowden.

Earlier, Jaua said that Mercosur leaders, when they meet on Friday, would release a resolution denouncing the diversion of the jet carrying Bolivian President Evo Morales home from Moscow last week.

Morales, who accused four European nations -- France, Italy, Portugal and Spain -- of denying their airspace because they believed Snowden was hiding on his plane, has been invited to the Mercosur summit.

MTS India names Brandmovers India as its social media agency

The brand's digital mandate was being handled by the digital arm of Rediffusion-Y&R, which was also handling the brand's overall creative duties.

Brandmovers India, a full-service digital creative agency, has bagged the social media account of MTS India. The appointment is the result of a multi-stage pitch process that saw participation from 19 leading social media agencies of the country.

According to sources, Webchutney, Hungama Digital, MRM Worldwide and specialist social agencies like Drizzlin, Social Wavelength and 2020 Social were in the fray for the account.

As part of the mandate, Brandmovers will power MTS' social media strategy that will include social media management, social media advertising, and content creation for all platforms over digital. The social media pitch was the first step of the comprehensive digital revamp being undertaken at MTS as part of the new digital strategy being rolled out by the company.

Till now, the brand's digital mandate was being handled by the digital arm of Rediffusion-Y&R, which was also handling the brand's overall creative duties. In fact, MTS moved its creative mandate from Rediffusion to Creativeland Asia, last week.

Commenting on the association, Leonid Musatov, chief marketing and sales officer, MTS India, says, "We wanted a fresh focus and renewed energy from our social media team to be able to mutually create content that engages our audience. We were looking for an interactive agency with an innate understanding of the social space and its underlying principles that could help us build the right platforms, programmes and digital content. In Brandmovers, we see a shared passion for the digital space, emphasis on innovation, and desire to create clutter breaking content."

Suvajyoti Ghosh, co-founder and managing director of Brandmovers India, states, "Creating innovative digital work requires a strong alignment between client ambitions and the agency's core values. We believe that both MTS and Brandmovers' visions are aligned to create some of the best digital content and campaigns in the Indian telecom sector. MTS is looking at digital as an important channel for communicating with its audience, which makes our role highly strategic. We cannot wait to start!"

Brandmovers is headquartered in Atlanta with offices in the Americas, London, Mumbai, Delhi and Mexico. In India, the agency recently won businesses such as Lipton Ice Tea and Lenskart.

Pentagon to revise danger pay country roster

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Pentagon security review shows conditions improving in 18 countries once considered so dangerous that U.S. military who served there found something extra in their paychecks each month.

Now the Defense Department wants to take those countries and five waterways off the danger pay roster, saving about $120 million each year while taking a bite out of an estimated 56,000 troops' salaries, The Associated Press has learned.

Senior defense and military leaders are expected to meet later this week to review the matter and are poised to approve a new plan. Pentagon press secretary George Little declined to discuss details but said no final decisions have been made.

Senior military leaders came up with the proposed list of locations in their regions, including several countries in the heart of the tumultuous Middle East, such as Jordan, where hundreds of troops have recently deployed because of the bloody Syrian civil war on its border, and Bahrain.

Officials have argued that if service members are allowed to bring their families with them for assignments then it is difficult to argue that they should receive danger pay.

Defense officials said the proposal would strip the stipend ? which can be up to $225 per month ? from tens of thousands, including thousands stationed in Kuwait, which was a key hub during the Iraq war. It also would affect thousands of sailors who routinely travel through the Persian Gulf region on ships or airmen who fly over the Gulf.

The $225 monthly cut in pay would come regardless of the service member's base salary, which can range from a low of roughly $18,000 a year for a brand new recruit to a high of nearly $235,000 a year for a four-star general with more than 40 years in the military. Troops also can receive a variety of other allowances for housing, clothing or job specialties.

Defense officials described the proposal on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about it.

Under the plans being discussed, troops would still receive the extra money if they serve in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Pakistan, Syria, Yemen and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. The U.S. does not have any military members now serving in Iran.

Some of the countries that could likely be dropped from the list include Bahrain, where the Navy's 5th Fleet is located, as well as Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Liberia, Haiti and several former Soviet republics.

The list has routinely evolved over many years, with countries added as they became more dangerous hotspots. And military leaders do periodic reviews of the list.

While the changes are based solely on the security review, the cuts also come as the Pentagon is under growing pressure to slash its budget, and as more than 650,000 civilians began taking the first of their 11 required days off without pay through the end of this fiscal year on Sept. 30.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said earlier this week that the fiscal pressures and congressional gridlock have led to far more abrupt and steeper cuts than expected. He noted that if Congress does not find a way to avoid the automatic budget cuts known as sequestration, the department will have to find $52 billion in additional savings next year.

So far, the danger pay decision does not affect the tax-free status of service members' pay when serving in those countries or on ships in the Gulf region.

Under existing Defense Department rules, military troops serving in as many as two dozen different nations as well as the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Gulf of Oman, Arabian Sea and Gulf of Aden have been able to receive the imminent danger pay. Until early 2012, they received the full monthly amount ? $225 at the time ? for any complete or partial month they served in any of the qualifying areas.

Beginning Feb. 1, 2012, troops received pro-rated payments of $7.50 for each day they were on official duty in one of the areas.

The total cost has been about $500 million per year.

Officials also said the proposed changes do not affect hostile fire pay. Service members who are exposed to a hostile fire or hostile mine explosion event are eligible to receive a full monthly payment of $225. But they can't receive both danger pay and hostile fire pay for the same month.

Sting to perform 10 concerts to benefit NY's Public Theater

NEW YORK (Reuters) - British pop star Sting will perform songs from his new album, "The Last Ship" at ten concerts later this year that will benefit New York's Public Theater art organization.

The singer, who shot to fame in the band the Police, said the concerts will run from September 25 through October 9 at the 260-seat Anspacher Theater at the arts organization in Manhattan.

In a statement he described the small venue as "a natural fit" to perform the material from the album.

"The Last Ship," which will be released on September 23, draws inspiration from Sting's childhood in northern England. It is his first album with original material since "Sacred Love" in 2003.

"For the first and only time, Sting will perform songs from his new album," the Public Theater said on its website.

A musical of the same name as the album, based on his experiences living near the Swan Hunter Shipyard in Wallsend, Newcastle, will also debut on Broadway next year.

Sting, 61, has released 10 albums since going solo around 1984. He has also acted in films such as "Quadrophenia," "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels," and appeared as himself in TV shows including "The Simpsons."

Japan star Matsuyama ready for British Golf Open

AFP - Japan's rookie superstar Hideki Matsuyama said Wednesday he is ready to impress in his debut at the British Open as he steps up his quest for a US Tour card.

"I will aim to make the cut, first of all. And, if I do, I will then target a spot in the top 10 or higher," he told reporters at Tokyo's Narita airport before leaving for next week's major event at Muirfield in Scotland.

The 21-year-old, the Asian amateur champion in 2011 and 2012, made his professional debut only in April when he started his fourth year at a Japanese university.

But he has since won twice and finished runner-up twice in eight domestic tournaments to lead the Japan Tour's money list at 99 million yen ($980,000), more than double the total of the second-placed player.

Matsuyama also finished tied 10th in his first US Open last month. He is currently ranked 46th in the world and has qualified for the year's final major, the August 5-11 PGA Championships in Rochester, New York.

"I believe Muirfield is a tough course and I will prepare myself well on the spot," he said, adding that he studied a DVD of the course. "It didn't help clear up my head much."

After the British Open, he will play in a few US Tour events, starting with the Canadian Open. If he remains in the world's top 50, he will be eligible to compete in the Bridgestone Invitational from August 1-4 in Akron, Ohio.

After the PGA Championships he hopes to compete in the year's final PGA event, the Wyndham Championship from August 15-18 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

"It is going to be a long expedition," Matsuyama said. "But I want to work hard and produce results in order to get a US Tour card."

He will earn a card for next year if he finishes in the top 125 on the US money list, where he will join fellow 21-year-old Japanese Ryo Ishikawa, who has struggled to make the cut in his first full year on the US Tour.

Matsuyama currently stands around 190th place with winnings from the US Open.

He has played in the Masters twice.

In 2011, he won his first Asian amateur championship to gain entry to the Masters. He finished tied 27th, winning the Silver Cup as the lowest scoring amateur.

He successfully defended his Asian amateur title in 2012 and finished 54th at the Masters.

Canada Train Explosion: 13 Dead, 40 Missing

Revellers at a bar close to where a runaway train carrying crude oil came off the rails and exploded are feared to be among 13 people killed in the accident.

Around 50 people remain unaccounted for after the unmanned 73-carriage freight train crashed at around 1am local time on Saturday in Lac-Megantic, near Quebec, in Canada.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper likened the scene to a "war zone", while witnesses described how flames engulfed the popular Musi-Caf?, which was only a few metres from the scene.

The nightspot was packed with about 60 people, including a group of 20 who were celebrating a birthday.

Bernard Th?berge was on the patio in front of the caf? smoking a cigarette when he heard the train and knew instantly that something was wrong, according to The Globe And Mail.

A firefighter walks past a burning train wagon at Lac Megantic
    A burning train wagon

The 44-year-old, who suffered second-degree burns, said: "It was going way too fast. I saw a wall of fire go up. People got up on the outside patio. I grabbed my bike, which was just on the railing of the terrace.

"I started pedalling and then I stopped and turned around. I saw that there were all those people inside and I knew right away that it would be impossible for them to get out. Smoking saved my life."

Bar owner Yannick Gagne left the venue shortly before the explosion and received a call from one of his waitresses who was trapped inside.

He told the National Post: "She was screaming that there was fire everywhere. I didn't understand. I said 'Get out of the restaurant. Leave everything there. It's okay. We?ll gather things tomorrow and lock up later'."

Although she managed to escape, three other waitresses and one singer who were inside at the time have not been heard from.

A firefighter walks past the remains of buildings after a train explosion at Lac Megantic
The prime minister described the site as a "war zone"

"They won't find anyone alive. It's impossible. People are waiting for news, but a fire at that temperature, nothing remains. It melts cars," said Mr Gagne.

Jacques Bolduc and Solange Gaudreault's 23-year-old son, Guy Bolduc, was performing at the bar that night.

Mr Bolduc told Radio-Canada: "Our boy wanted so much to live. The police told us there is no hope. The train exploded 30 feet from the (Musi-Caf?) bar."

Quebec provincial police sergeant Benoit Richard said only a small part of the devastated scene had been searched as firefighters made sure all the flames were out.

A coroner's spokeswoman said it might not be possible to recover some of the bodies because of the intensity of the blasts.

    Explosions after train derails
Some 40 people are still missing after the explosions

All but one of the train's tanker cars were carrying oil when they somehow came loose, sped downhill nearly seven miles into the town near the Maine border, derailed and began exploding one by one.

Mario Ducharme, 38, who had been visiting a friend at his home close to the caf?, told the National Post: "I thought it was the end of the world. We could hear the train cars cracking from the heat."

The Canadian Prime Minister visited?the area on Sunday and said: "his is an unbelievable disaster.

"This is an enormous area, 30 buildings just completely destroyed, for all intents and purposes incinerated. There isn't a family that is not affected by this."

About a third of the community of 6,000 people were forced out of their homes.

Fears remain over two oil-filled train cars at the scene. They were being doused with water and foam to keep them from overheating.

The oil was being transported from North Dakota's Bakken oil region to a refinery in New Brunswick.

Because of limited pipeline capacity in the Bakken region and in Canada, oil producers are increasingly using railroads to transport oil to refineries.

The Quebec disaster is the fourth freight train accident in Canada under investigation involving crude oil shipments since the beginning of the year.

Transportation Safety Board investigator Donald Ross said the black box of the locomotive has been recovered, but officials have not been able to access much of the site.

Facebook?is adding a dose of Google to its repertoire.

The Menlo Park, Calif.-based social media giant says its personalized search function "Graph Search" will become available to all Facebook users in the U.S. who have the English version in the next few weeks, according to a statement released today. Your search box will be automatically updated, Facebook says.

A beta version of Graph Search was released in January. The internal search function mines photos and comments to find recommendations on what to eat, where to shop or what to buy based on what your friends like.

Facebook users individually determine the content that can be searched with their privacy settings. If you set a photo as viewable only to you, then it will not come up in a search. If you set a photo as viewable to your friends, then it will come up in searches that your friends conduct. Meanwhile, if you allow a photo to be viewable by everybody, then it will come up in all searches.

Reviews on the Facebook Graph Search have so far been mixed. Some social media experts say it holds promise for business owners because it will allow them to advertise next to search results. Others say the initial versions have a clunky user experience.

Facebook says?over the past few months it has taken the feedback it received from tens of millions of people and made the search tool faster, improved the ability of the function to understand queries and made the interface easier to see and use. "This is just the beginning," says Facebook in its announcement.

Toddler who received lab-made windpipe dies

CHICAGO (AP) ? A 2-year-old girl who was implanted with a windpipe grown from her own stem cells three months ago, becoming the youngest person to receive the experimental treatment, has died.

Hannah Warren died Saturday at Children's Hospital of Illinois in Peoria, hospital spokeswoman Shelli Dankoff said. The hospital said in a statement that Hannah couldn't "overcome additional health issues that were identified as her care progressed."

Her family asked for privacy, but expressed their sorrow in a fundraising blog updated Sunday: "She is a pioneer in stem-cell technology and her impact will reach all corners of our beautiful Earth. Her new trachea was performing well, but her lungs went from fairly good, to weak, to poor."

Hannah's treatment was part of an ongoing scientific effort to develop lab-grown tissues and organs. Similar methods have been used to grow bladders, urethras and last year a girl in Sweden got a lab-made vein using her own stem cells and a cadaver vein.

In Hannah's case, the stem cells came from her bone marrow. They were seeded in a lab onto a plastic scaffold, where it took a few days for them to multiply and create a new windpipe, which was implanted April 9.

Hannah was born in South Korea and traveled to Illinois for the surgery. A pediatric surgeon in Peoria had met Hannah's family while on a business trip to South Korea and helped connect them with Dr. Paolo Macchiarini, an Italian surgeon based in Sweden who pioneered the technique.

Hannah's parents, Darryl Warren and Lee Young-mi, had read about Macchiarini's success using stem-cell based tracheas, but they couldn't afford to pay for the operation at his center in Stockholm. Dr. Mark Holterman, the Illinois doctor, helped the family arrange to have the procedure at his hospital with Macchiarini leading the surgical team. Children's Hospital waived the cost.

The hospital is part of OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, a Roman Catholic system that considers the operation part of its mission to provide charity care and a way to champion a type of stem-cell therapy that doesn't involve human embryos, the surgeons said in April. The Catholic church opposes using stem cells derived from human embryos in research or treatment.

Hannah wasn't able to leave the hospital after the operation, Dankoff said. The girl's family and her caregivers believe the knowledge gained from her surgery will benefit other patients.

Hannah would have been 3 years old on Aug. 22.

"We will forever miss her infectious personality and miraculous strength and spirit," her family wrote on their blog.

Miguel Cabrera flattens baseball with mighty home run swing [PHOTO]

We knew Miguel Cabrera was strong, but we didn't know his cells apparently soak up rays from the Earth's yellow sun and grant him powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal baseball players.

Case in point: One flattened baseball, courtesy of the Tigers' star slugger. And we do mean flattened. Just take a look at the picture.

The eye-popping feat occured as Cabrera belted his 28th home run of the year against the Indians Sunday. The Tigers lost the game, but that will be of little comfort to the undoubtedly traumatized ball.

PIZZA & HEALTH: Memory Training: Unlock Your Memory Recall By ...

If you have to remember lots of information to pass your subject and get a good grade then having a "great memory" is a must - and let's face it, what student wouldn't love to be able to recall facts and figures without any effort at all?

But how many students actually take the time to understand how their memory works? We'd all love a brilliant memory but we spend very little time (if any) using the techniques that make this possible. Don't you ever wonder why you can remember lots of seemingly useless information but when it comes time to recall all that information you learnt in science class during the year you can't remember a thing?

The fact is that we all have a perfect memory and it functions exactly the way it is designed to function - except that we don't take the time to understand how it works.

For some reason, we expect to be able to recall information at will (usually just by constantly repeating the word or re-reading the information we want to remember) without any understanding of how memory recall even works. As a result, the way we approach memory recall is usually quite dumb.

The smart approach to memory recall is to first take the time to learn how your memory works and then manipulate your memory (in a good way!) in order to recall exactly what you need to remember for that next test or exam.

There are many ways to increase the power of your memory recall. This article looks at just one - the "All about me" technique. The rule of this technique is that when you make something about you, the ability to remember the information is drastically increased.

When it comes to memory, your brain always wants to know "How does this relate to me?" or put even more simply "Why should I even bother storing this as a memory?"

Therefore, when a bit of information or data is personally significant to you, your memory is far more likely to store that information for you (and the real kicker is that it will remember all the little details about it as well!)

You remember to do things that are going to impact you directly (like making sure you buy a ticket to the next Green Day concert). You remember names of people and places and locations that are really going to impact your life. You remember prices of things that you really want to buy. You remember where, what time and with whom you are going out with on Saturday night. You remember the name and phone number of that girl or guy you like.

Now, you don't do this recall on a conscious basis, it just happens automatically. You simply called up the information and because it was important and relevant to you, it was easy to retrieve. However, the real question I'm sure you are wondering is how do we apply this rule of memory to our studies? Well, you simple need to think about how whatever you are trying to learn or remember relates to you and your life. Let's look at some examples.

Let's say you are learning about economic trends (extremely interesting I know). Instead of just looking at economic bell curves and wondering how life could be so boring you need to make the information all about you. Economic trends impact your purchasing power which impacts the amount of money in your wallet which impacts your ability to buy that thing you really want. So does that context make economic trends easier to remember?

If you are learning about other cultures (for example) you can simply compare their culture to your own. In what ways does the culture differ from your own? In what ways does it match? In what ways is it kind of similar but not really? Asking yourself these questions may seem silly but the more questions you can ask that are actually about you, the more you will remember.

How about names and dates and details? Well how do these names, dates and details impact you? Do you know anyone else by the same name that you can link them to? Are the dates significant to you personally, or your parents, or your friends, or your country? Why do the details matter to you? By the way, if you can't think of anything just make it up. You'll be surprised that even if you create false reasons you will still remember the reasons and thus the details!

The point is, take what you need to learn and make it about you. Most people enjoy being self-centered anyway so just extend on your natural inclination! The more you make it all about you and relate it back to yourself the more easily you will build memory traces and improve your memory recall. Give it a try, it really works. Good luck.
