National Travel Insurance Survey Results ? Who Buys It and Is It ...

As a frequent traveler, I?ve always balked at purchasing travel insurance because I?ve been confused by the different policies and whether it actually has any value. However, recently I embarked on a mission to research the topic and find out which policies were actually worth it. To start off, I commissioned Princeton Survey Research Associates International to conduct a study to find out if I was alone and see whether or not people think it?s worth it, and the results were very interesting.

In all, only about half of the respondents said they had a pretty good idea of what travel insurance covers while 49% admitted to being unsure of what travel insurance covers.

Do you always buy travel insurance BAR

Only 21% of people purchase travel insurance (only 7% of them purchase it regularly) with an astounding 78% of people responding that they either never purchase travel insurance or take a trip where it is offered.

Main reason you buy PIE

Of the people that do purchase travel insurance, the main reason they buy it when going on airline trips or cruises was trip cancellation by a long shot, with 52% of respondents picking that as their main reason. Medical coverage was the main reason for another 27% of travelers while 20% claimed another reason.

Screen Shot 2013-06-24 at 8.26.31 AM

In all, only 37% of people surveyed said they felt that travel insurance was worth the cost. Nearly half ? 47% ? said travel insurance wasn?t worth the cost, while 16% had no opinion.

That?s a lot of numbers to throw out there, but the main conclusion I draw is that, in fact, even people who purchase travel insurance don?t know exactly what they are buying and what it will cover.

Although we?ve all learned to be a little leery of the offers of ?Trip Protection? and ?Cancellation Protection? add-ons we see when purchasing airline tickets through airlines or online travel agencies these days, as well as the ?Travel Accident? and ?Travel Emergency Assistance? many credit cards offer as part of their benefits suite, travel insurance is different than these forms of coverage.

Whereas just buying a refundable plane ticket might be your best bet if you think you might cancel a trip, more extensive travel insurance can be extraordinarily prudent and valuable in certain situations, such as taking expensive non-refundable trips, or traveling to international destinations where medical care might be limited and if something happens evacuation may be required.

That said, it?s also extremely important to educate yourself on what exactly your travel insurance plan will cover and what it won?t ? the same as with those travel accident and emergency benefits that come with your credit cards.

For instance, though most consumers claimed trip cancellation as the main reason they purchase travel insurance, what and when you can cancel depends on your plan, and it?s often much more complicated than just changing your mind and deciding not to take a trip.

Likewise the medical coverage, it?s important to know whether evacuation or transportation is included in your plan, what medical expenses are covered and what exclusions there are.

In short ? there?s a lot of fine print!

However, as more and more mainstream travelers venture farther afield to corners of the globe that were once inaccessible, more and more of us are going to be considering travel insurance and it?s important to know what?s out there.

As a follow up to this survey, I am going to cover the basics of travel insurance including a rundown of the various kinds of plans that currently exist, what they cover, what to look for in an insurance plan, and the kinds of coverage many of the top travel credit cards out there offer, so stay tuned for future posts, and if you have questions you?d like answered, please feel free to comment below.

What has your experience been with travel insurance?

'How NCC'll execute broadband plan with CTO' - Vanguard

By Prince Osuagwu

FROM all indications, the Nigerian Communications Commission is planning to use the hosting of the next edition of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation forum in Nigeria, to facilitate the execution of the newly approved broadband plan in Nigeria.

This plan manifested as Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr. Eugene Juwah, last weekend, disclosed that the forum was deliberately pitched around broadband so that intricacies of implementation would be given adequate attention by stakeholders.

Juwah said the theme of the event, ?Beyond Broadband? will immensely benefit subscribers who have been having it rough with quality of service in recent times.

The forum, scheduled to hold in Abuja from October 7 to 11 is a synergy between the NCC and the Ministry of Communication Technology. It is expected to provide an avenue for extensive discussion on the Broadband Plan 2013-2018 and woo investors to help in facilitating its achievement. According to Juwah, the programme will play host to about 20 foreign ministers of communications technology from around Africa, as well as other key industry experts both in and outside the country.

He reminded participants that he made broadband deployment one of his cardinal programmes when he assumed office over two years ago, stressing that effective deployment of broadband in Nigeria would usher a new phase of competition in the telecom sector. For him, ?effective broadband deployment will put new economic powers in the hands of the Nigerian people wherever they may live.

The Broadband Plan has the objective of promoting pervasive broadband deployment, increase broadband adoption and usage.? ?As the industry regulator, we are prepared to play our role in the broadband plan and ensure that through our regulatory responsibilities and interventions, the plan is speedily and adequately delivered for use in the country.?? Also, Secretary-General of CTO, Professor Tim Unwin, lauded the Nigerian National Broadband Plan 2013-2018, describing it as an ambitious initiative.

He also acknowledged that the event would bring together regulators, governments, operators, vendors and Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) and highlight solutions to broadband infrastructure, revenue management and security challenges. He, therefore, tasked government and private sectors to collaborate with NCC and the ministry to ensure that the benefits of broadband for all are realised.

The broadband policy aims to connect 80 per cent of the population with broadband within five years.

The 29 awards will total $12.7 million and are being made under the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program

The Air Force announced today that 29 university researchers at 26 academic institutions have been selected to receive awards to support the purchase of research instrumentation. The 29 awards will total $12.7 million and are being made under the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP).

The DURIP supports the purchase of state of the-art equipment that augments current or develops new university capabilities to perform cutting edge defense research. DURIP meets a critical need by enabling university researchers to purchase scientific equipment costing $50,000 or more to conduct DoD relevant research, as purchasing these instruments under research contracts and grants is difficult.

These awards are the result of a merit competition for DURIP funding jointly conducted by the Army Research Office, the Office of Naval Research, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. The awards announced today will be made by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Awards made by the Army Research Office and the Office of Naval Research were announced via defense.gov on 3 June 2013.

The program is highly competitive. The Air Force Office of Scientific Research requested proposals from university investigators conducting science and engineering research of importance to DoD. This includes research underpinning advances in surface chemistry and physics, computing and networks, electronics and electro optics, neuroscience, fluid dynamics, robotics and autonomous systems, and biological science and engineering. In response to the requests, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research received 260 proposals requesting $99,852,968 in support for research equipment. Collectively, the Army Research Office, the Office of Naval Research, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research received more than -- 750 proposals requesting $288 million in support for research equipment.

The DURIP awards granted by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research will range from $124,000 to $890,000 and average approximately $440,000. All awards are subject to the successful completion of negotiations between the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the academic institutions.

New round of thunderstorms threatens Midwest

By Brendan O'Brien

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - A fresh batch of damaging storms is expected to sweep through the Midwest on Monday afternoon and evening, potentially dampening efforts to restore power to thousands of households in the region.

The National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm watches and warnings for portions of south-central and southeastern Iowa, northwestern Illinois and northern Missouri through Monday evening.

The thunderstorms could pack 80 mph winds, large hail and possibly a few tornadoes, the service said.

Parts of central and eastern Iowa, northern Illinois, southeastern Minnesota, southern Indiana and northern Kentucky were also under flash flood and flood warnings on Monday, according to the weather service.

The severe weather could pose problems for Xcel Energy Inc workers in Minnesota who are attempting to restore power to 54,000 households, about 48,000 of which are in the Twin Cities area.

According to the power company, up to 614,000 customers have experienced power outages since early Friday morning after an initial round of storms rolled through, downing trees, damaging power lines and flooding streets throughout southern Minnesota.

Power is expected to be fully restored by early Wednesday, according to Xcel Energy spokesman Tom Hoen.

A severe storm moved through the Omaha, Nebraska, metro area on Monday morning, bringing with it strong winds. More than 43,000 Omaha Public Power District customers were without power Monday afternoon because of that storm.

In western Iowa, 6,400 customers were without power, according to MidAmerican Energy. Weather spotters in Council Bluffs, a suburb of Omaha, reported 60 mph wind gusts that brought down trees and power lines.

House investigators: Disability judges too lax

(AP) ? U.S. House investigators say Social Security is approving state-rejected claims for disability benefits at strikingly high rates for people who might not deserve them. Compounding the problem, the agency often fails to do required follow-up reviews to make sure people still qualify for benefits months or years later.

Claims for benefits have increased by 25 percent since 2007, pushing the fund that supports the disability program to the brink of insolvency. Social Security officials say the primary driver of the increase is a surge in baby boomers more prone to disabilities as they age but not quite old enough to qualify for retirement benefits.

Investigators from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee say management problems also add to the financial problems of the cash-strapped program.

South Africa: Nelson Mandela in critical condition

(AP) ? Nelson Mandela's health has deteriorated and he is now in critical condition, the South African government said Sunday.

The office of President Jacob Zuma said in a statement that he had visited the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader at a hospital Sunday evening and was informed by the medical team that Mandela's condition had become critical in the past 24 hours.

"The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba is well-looked after and is comfortable. He is in good hands," Zuma said in the statement, using Mandela's clan name.

Zuma also met Graca Machel, Mandela's wife, at the hospital in Pretoria and discussed the former leader's condition, according to the statement. Zuma was accompanied on the visit by Cyril Ramaphosa, the deputy president of the country's ruling party, the African National Congress.

Mandela was jailed for 27 years under white racist rule and released in 1990. He then played a leading role in steering the divided country from the apartheid era to democracy, becoming South Africa's first black president in all-race elections in 1994. He was hospitalized on June 8 for what the government said was a recurring lung infection.

In Sunday's statement, Zuma also discussed the government's acknowledgement a day earlier that an ambulance carrying Mandela to the hospital two weeks ago had engine trouble, requiring the former president to be transferred to another ambulance for his journey to the hospital.

"There were seven doctors in the convoy who were in full control of the situation throughout the period. He had expert medical care," Zuma said. "The fully equipped military ICU ambulance had a full complement of specialist medical staff including intensive care specialists and ICU nurses. The doctors also dismissed the media reports that Madiba suffered cardiac arrest. There is no truth at all in that report."

Mandela is seen by many around the world as a symbol of reconciliation, and Zuma appealed to South Africans and the international community to pray for the ailing ex-president, his family and the medical team attending to him.

The ruling party expressed concern about the deterioration in Mandela's health.

"We welcome the work being done by The Presidency to ensure that South Africans and people of the world are kept informed on the state of Madiba's health," the party said. "The African National Congress joins The Presidency in calling upon all of us to keep President Mandela, his family and his medical team in our thoughts and prayers during this trying time."

Prior to Zuma's statement late Sunday, reports from the government, former President Thabo Mbeki and a grandson of Mandela had indicated that the health of Mandela was improving, even though he has been in the hospital for treatment several times in recent months. Mandela last made a public appearance in 2010, and has become increasingly frail in recent years.

On April 29, state television broadcast footage of a visit by Zuma and other leaders of the African National Congress to Mandela's home. Zuma said at the time that Mandela was in good shape, but the footage ? the first public images of Mandela in nearly a year ? showed him silent and unresponsive, even when Zuma tried to hold his hand.

Egypt court: Brotherhood members planned jailbreak

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian court on Sunday said Muslim Brotherhood members conspired with Hamas, Hezbollah and local militants to storm a prison in 2011 and free 34 Brotherhood leaders, including the future President Mohammed Morsi.

The court statement read by judge Khaled Mahgoub named two members of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood ? Ibrahim Haggag and Sayed Ayad ? to be among the alleged conspirators in the attack on Wadi el-Natroun prison on Jan. 29, 2011.

It is the first statement by a court that holds members of the Brotherhood, Hamas and Hezbollah responsible for the attack on Wadi el-Natroun and two other prisons in which members of the Palestinian and Lebanese groups were held.

Morsi and other Brotherhood leaders have maintained that they were freed by local residents. Hamas, the Palestinian chapter of the Brotherhood, has denied involvement in the attacks on prisons.

The prison breaks took place during the 18-day popular uprising that toppled the 29-year regime of autocrat Hosni Mubarak. The breaks led to a flood of some 23,000 criminals onto the streets, fueling a crime wave that continues to this day. Among those who escaped were around 40 members of Hamas and Hezbollah as well as the 34 Brotherhood leaders.

A total of 26 top police, prison and intelligence officials have testified before the court, which held its hearings in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia. Some gave their testimony in closed session.

The case began in January when a former inmate appealed a three-month sentence passed by a lower court that convicted him of escaping Wadi el-Natroun. The defendant was acquitted by judge Mahgoub, who on Sunday referred the testimonies and evidence gathered during the trial on the jailbreak at Wadi el-Natroun to prosecutors to investigate.

In Egypt's polarized political climate, Morsi's opponents have been using his escape from Wadi el-Natroun against him, saying friends of the Brotherhood violated the country's security and fed its instability. The eagerness of some in the intelligence and security agencies to blame Hamas could in part reflect resentment of the Brotherhood's ties with the militant group, which they have long seen as a threat.

The Wadi el-Natroun prison in which Morsi and his Brotherhood comrades were held is part of a four-jail complex northwest of Cairo. A total of 11,171 inmates were released from the complex. Thirteen inmates were also killed, according to Mahgoub, who said the attackers used machine-guns mounted on pickup trucks and SUVs as well as huge earth-moving vehicles that demolished parts of the walls and gates.

AP PHOTOS: Supermoon looms bright in night sky

Look up in the sky for a super sight: the biggest and brightest full moon of the year.

The so-called supermoon will appear 14 percent larger than normal early Sunday as our celestial neighbor swings closer to Earth. Some may think the supermoon looks more dazzling, but it's actually an optical illusion. The moon looms larger on the horizon next to trees and buildings.

The moon will come within 222,000 miles of Earth and turn full around 7:30 a.m. EDT, making it the best time to view.

Here are AP photos of the supermoon:

South Africa: Mandela ambulance had engine problem

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? An ambulance carrying Nelson Mandela to a hospital two weeks ago had engine trouble, so the 94-year-old was transferred to another ambulance for his journey to the hospital, the South African government said Saturday.

Care was taken to ensure the condition of the former president was not affected, it said.

The anti-apartheid leader remains in serious but stable condition in a hospital, the office of President Jacob Zuma said in a statement.

The government confirmed reports about transport problems when the former leader was taken to the hospital for what officials have said is a recurring lung infection. CBS News reported that Mandela had to be transferred in wintertime temperatures to another ambulance in the early morning of June 8 after waiting on the side of the highway for 40 minutes.

The government said doctors are satisfied that the Nobel Peace Prize laureate suffered "no harm" at the time.

Mandela was taken from his home in the Johannesburg neighborhood of Houghton to a hospital in Pretoria, the capital, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) away.

"The fully equipped military ICU ambulance had a full complement of specialist medical staff including intensive care specialists and ICU nurses. The convoy also included two quick response vehicles," the presidency said. "When the ambulance experienced engine problems it was decided that it would be best to transfer to another military ambulance which itself was accompanied for the rest of the journey by a civilian ambulance."

The statement added: "All care was taken to ensure that the former president Mandela's medical condition was not compromised by the unforeseen incident."

In recent days, reports from the government, former President Thabo Mbeki and a grandson of Mandela have indicated that the health of Mandela is improving, although he has been in the hospital for treatment several times in recent months.

Close family members have been visiting him daily in a Pretoria hospital amid an outpouring of prayers and messages of support from South Africans and people around the world.

Zuma's office appealed for Mandela's privacy to be respected "and that he be accorded the doctor-patient confidentiality that all patients are entitled to in terms of medical ethics."

Mandela was jailed for 27 years under white racist rule and was released in 1990. He then played a leading role in steering the divided country from the apartheid era to democracy, becoming South Africa's first black president in all-race elections in 1994. As a result of his sacrifice and peacemaking efforts, he is seen by many around the world as a symbol of reconciliation.

8. Wool and Synthetic Fabrics

8 Cool Gadgets To Help You Survive the Summer Heat

Suggested by: twelvehappymen

Clothing is key. I'm a sweaty dude that walks everywhere in a hot/humid part of the world. I try to banish as much cotton from my wardrobe as possible.

If you can afford it, the modern smartwool/icebreaker/ibex merino stuff is amazing. Much better than any of the high-tech synthetics in my experience. Cotton undershirts get soaked and feel clammy all day if you wear them under a dress shirt. Synthetics that are good at wicking and dry quickly when exposed to air flow, but suck when worn under another layer. And they get stinky. Wool is kinda miraculous, being able to wick, dry quickly when exposed to air and (critically) remain comfortable when completely waterlogged.

My icebreaker wool hoodie is my go-to garment for clammy summer nights when a t-shirt is too light but a sweatshirt is too sweaty. I've got some wool underwear that's pretty nice, too, but even a wool zealot has trouble spending $30 for something that you fart in.

Also, a broad brimmed hat. I call it my Hat of Pragmatism. My son calls it the Explorer Hat. My wife calls it "that thing". Whatever you call it, it makes wandering around in the sun a lot more enjoyable.

Price: ~$30-100

Disabled workers paid just pennies an hour ? and it's legal - Open ...

By Anna Schecter, Producer, NBC News

One of the nation's best-known charities is paying disabled workers as little as 22 cents an hour, thanks to a 75-year-old legal loophole that critics say needs to be closed.

Goodwill Industries, a multibillion-dollar company whose executives make six-figure salaries, is among the nonprofit groups permitted to pay thousands of disabled workers far less than minimum wage because of a federal law known as Section 14 (c). Labor Department records show that some Goodwill workers in Pennsylvania earned wages as low as 22, 38 and 41 cents per hour in 2011.

"If they really do pay the CEO of Goodwill three-quarters of a million dollars, they certainly can pay me more than they're paying," said Harold Leigland, who is legally blind and hangs clothes at a Goodwill in Great Falls, Montana for less than minimum wage.

"It's a question of civil rights," added his wife, Sheila, blind from birth, who quit her job at the same Goodwill store when her already low wage was cut further. "I feel like a second-class citizen. And I hate it."

Section 14 (c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act, which was passed in 1938, allows employers to obtain special minimum wage certificates from the Department of Labor. The certificates give employers the right to pay disabled workers according to their abilities, with no bottom limit to the wage.

Most, but not all, special wage certificates are held by nonprofit organizations like Goodwill that then set up their own so-called "sheltered workshops" for disabled employees, where employees typically perform manual tasks like hanging clothes.

The non-profit certificate holders can also place employees in outside, for-profit workplaces including restaurants, retail stores, hospitals and even Internal Revenue Service centers. Between the sheltered workshops and the outside businesses, more than 216,000 workers are eligible to earn less than minimum wage because of Section 14 (c), though many end up earning the full federal minimum wage of $7.25.

When a non-profit provides Section 14 (c) workers to an outside business, it sets the salary and pays the wages. For example, the Helen Keller National Center, a New York school for the blind and deaf, has a special wage certificate and has placed students in a Westbury, N.Y., Applebee's franchise. The employees' pay ranged from $3.97 per hour to $5.96 per hour in 2010. The franchise told NBC News it has also hired workers at minimum wage from Helen Keller. A spokesperson for Applebee's declined to comment on Section 14 (c).

Helen Keller also placed several students at a Barnes & Noble bookstore in Manhasset, N.Y., in 2010, where they earned $3.80 and $4.85 an hour. A Barnes & Noble spokeswoman defended the Section 14 (c) program as providing jobs to "people who would otherwise not have [the opportunity to work]."

Most Section 14 (c) workers are employed directly by nonprofits. In 2001, the most recent year for which numbers are available, the GAO estimated that more than 90 percent of Section 14 (c) workers were employed at nonprofit work centers.

Critics of Section 14 (c) have focused much of their ire on the nonprofits, where wages can be just pennies an hour even as some of the groups receive funding from the government. At one workplace in Florida run by a nonprofit, some employees earned one cent per hour in 2011.

"People are profiting from exploiting disabled workers," said Ari Ne'eman, president of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network. "It is clearly and unquestionably exploitation."

Defenders of Section 14 (c) say that without it, disabled workers would have few options. A Department of Labor spokesperson said in a statement to NBC News that Section 14 (c) "provides workers with disabilities the opportunity to be given meaningful work and receive an income."

Terry Farmer, CEO of ACCSES, a trade group that calls itself the "voice of disability service providers," said scrapping the provision could "force [disabled workers] to stay at home," enter rehabilitation, "or otherwise engage in unproductive and unsatisfactory activities."

Harold Leigland, however, said he feels that Goodwill can pay him a low wage because the company knows he has few other places to go. "We are trapped," he said. "Everybody who works at Goodwill is trapped."

Leigland, a 66-year-old former massage therapist with a college degree, currently earns $5.46 per hour in Great Falls.

His wages have risen and fallen based on "time studies," the method nonprofits use to calculate the salaries of Section 14 (c) workers. Staff members use a stopwatch to determine how long it takes a disabled worker to complete a task. That time is compared with how long it would take a person without a disability to do the same task. The nonprofit then uses a formula to calculate a salary, which may be equal to or less than minimum wage. The tests are repeated every six months.

Harold Leigland works at the Goodwill facility in Great Falls, Montana, where he earns $5.46 an hour.

Leigland's pay has been higher than $5.46, but it has also dropped down to $4.37 per hour, based on the time-study results.
He said he believes Goodwill makes the time studies harder when they want his wage to be lower.

"Sometimes the test is easier than others. It depends on if, as near as I can figure, they want your wage to go up or down. It's that simple," he said.

His wife, Sheila, 58, spent four years hanging clothes at the Great Falls Goodwill for about $3.50 an hour. She said the time study was one of the most degrading and stressful parts about her job. "You never know how it's going to come out. It stressed me out a lot," she said.

She quit last summer when she returned to work after knee surgery and found that her wage had been lowered to $2.75 per hour, a training rate.

"At $2.75 it would barely cover my cost of getting to work. I wouldn't make any money," she said.

Harold said he believes Goodwill can afford to pay him minimum wage, based on the salaries paid to Goodwill executives. While according to the company's own figures about 4,000 of the 30,000 disabled workers Goodwill employs at 69 franchises are currently paid below minimum wage, salaries for the CEOs of those franchises that hold special minimum wage certificates totaled almost $20 million in 2011.

In 2011 the CEO of Goodwill Industries of Southern California took home $1.1 million in salary and deferred compensation. His counterpart in Portland, Oregon, made more than $500,000. Salaries for CEOs of the roughly 150 Goodwill franchises across America total more than $30 million.

Goodwill International CEO Jim Gibbons, who was awarded $729,000 in salary and deferred compensation in 2011, defended the executive pay.

"These leaders are having a great impact in terms of new solutions, in terms of innovation, and in terms of job creation," he said.

Gibbons also defended time studies, and the whole Section 14 (c) approach. He said that for many people who make less than minimum wage, the experience of work is more important than the pay.

"It's typically not about their livelihood. It's about their fulfillment. It's about being a part of something. And it's probably a small part of their overall program," he said.

And Goodwill and the organizations that run the sheltered workshops are not alone in their support for Section 14 (c). In many cases, the families of the workers who have severe disabilities say their loved ones enjoy the work experience, enjoy getting a paycheck, and the amount is of no consequence.

"I feel really good about it. I don't have to worry so much about him," said Fran Davidson, whose son Jeremy has worked at Goodwill in Great Falls, Montana, for more than a decade. "I know he's not getting picked on, and he's in a safe place. He enjoys what he's doing, and he's happy, and that's what we like for our kids." Jeremy started out working for a sub-minimum wage but did well on his last time study and is currently earning $7.80 an hour, Montana's minimum wage.

But foes of Section 14 (c) have hopes for a new bill that's now before Congress that would repeal Section 14 (c) and make sub-minimum wages illegal across the board.

"Meaningful work deserves fair pay," the sponsor of the bill, Rep. Gregg Harper, R.-Miss., told NBC News. "This dated provision unjustly prohibits workers with disabilities from reaching their full potential."

The bill is opposed by trade associations for the employers of the disabled, and past attempts to change the law have failed. But Marc Maurer, president of the National Federation of the Blind and a foe of the sheltered workshop system, is cautiously optimistic that this time the bill will pass, and end what he called a "two-tiered system."

That system, explained Maurer, says "'Americans who have disabilities aren't as valuable as other people,' and that's wrong. These folks have value. We should recognize that value."

Chasing After Allosaurus
A little more than a year ago, in the corner of a Salt Lake City tattoo parlor spattered with sci-fi ephemera and fantasy art, I watched as artist Jon McAffee inked an Allosaurus onto my arm. The bloody art was a celebration of a dream realized and a promise to myself.

Samsung ATIV Q: hands-on with the company's new Windows-Android slider (video)

Samsung ATIV Q: hands-on with Sammy's new Windows-Android slider

The products keep coming. The latest announcement from Samsung is a new addition to its ATIV range and it's a hybrid in more ways than one. Similar to the ASUS Transformer Book Trio, announced earlier this month at Computex, Samsung just introduced its own dual-OS portable. It's called the ATIV Q, and it combines Android 4.2 and Windows 8, with equal parts tablet and typing. Under the hood, the device is powered by a Haswell-series Intel Core i5 processor and manages to fit a 13.3-inch, 3,200 x 1,800 touchscreen into a 1.29kg package that measures just 13.9mm thick. Other notable specs include an S Pen with 1,024 degrees of sensitivity. There's space for the stylus to be stored in the bottom corner of the device. Hardware considerations have also been folded into the design, with the processor housed inside the ATIV Q's hinge. Samsung says that this ensures that heat dissipates from the back of the device.

A software highlight from this particular Windows 8-Android team-up is the ability to share files (photos, documents... seemingly anything that can be opened with programs on the other OS) and share folders across the operating system divide. We can certainly see the usefulness in this approach -- sharing images to your favorite Android social app and generally unifying how you use the hybrid, regardless of OS. The ATIV Q will launch globally in Q3, and we've been told "in time for the back-to-school season", which sounds like sooner rather than later. We've managed to spend a bit of time with the new multi-talented slider: check out some first impressions after the break.

Update: We just added some video.
