Benedict to be called 'emeritus pope,' wear white

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Two pontiffs, both wearing white, both called "pope" and living a few yards from one another, with the same key aide serving them.

The Vatican's announcement Tuesday that Pope Benedict XVI will be known as "emeritus pope" in his retirement, be called "Your Holiness" and continue to wear the white cassock associated with the papacy has fueled concerns about potential conflicts arising from the peculiar reality now facing the Catholic Church: having one reigning and one retired pope.

Benedict's title and what he will wear have been a major source of speculation since the 85-year-old pontiff stunned the world and announced he would resign Thursday, the first pope to do so in 600 years.

There has been good reason why popes haven't stepped down in past centuries, given the possibility for divided allegiances and even schism. But the Vatican insists that while the situation created by Benedict's retirement is certainly unique, no major conflicts will arise.

"According to the evolution of Catholic doctrine and mentality, there is only one pope. Clearly it's a new situation, but I don't think there will be problems," Giovanni Maria Vian, the editor of the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, said in an interview.

Critics aren't so sure. Some Vatican-based cardinals have privately grumbled that it will make it more difficult for the next pope with Benedict still around.

Swiss theologian Hans Kueng, Benedict's one-time colleague-turned-critic, went further: "With Benedict XVI, there is a risk of a shadow pope who has abdicated but can still indirectly exert influence," he told Germany's Der Spiegel magazine last week.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Tuesday that Benedict himself decided on his name and wardrobe in consultation with others, settling on "Your Holiness Benedict XVI" and either "emeritus pope" or "emeritus Roman pontiff."

Lombardi said he didn't know why Benedict had decided to drop his other main title: bishop of Rome.

In the two weeks since Benedict's resignation announcement, Vatican officials had suggested that Benedict would likely resume wearing the traditional black garb of a cleric and would use the title "emeritus bishop of Rome" to avoid creating confusion with the future pope.

Adding to the concern is that Benedict's trusted secretary, Archbishop Georg Gaenswein, will be serving both pontiffs ? living with Benedict at the monastery being converted for him inside Vatican grounds while keeping his day job as prefect of the new pope's household.

Asked about the potential for conflict, Lombardi was defensive, saying the decisions had been clearly reasoned and were likely chosen for the sake of simplicity.

"I believe it was well thought out," he said.

Benedict himself has made clear he is retiring to a lifetime of prayer and meditation "hidden from the world." However, he still will be very present in the tiny Vatican city-state, where his new home is right next door to the Vatican Radio transmission tower and has a lovely view of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica.

Kueng said it was a mistake for Gaenswein to serve both men and for Benedict to remain so close to the center of action.

"No priest likes it if his predecessor sits next to the rectory and watches everything he does," Kueng was quoted as saying in Der Spiegel. "And even for the bishop of Rome, it is not pleasant if his predecessor constantly has an eye on him."

However, others reasoned that Benedict's retirement plans and title were in keeping with those of other retired heads of state.

"I was somewhat surprised that Benedict would still be called 'His Holiness' and would wear white, but it's akin to the former U.S. presidents being addressed as 'Mr. President,'" said the Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit writer and editor. "It's a mark of respect for the former office he once held."

"Overall, I don't think that after the conclave there will be any doubt about who the pope is, or who is in charge," he said.

While Benedict will no longer wear his trademark red shoes, he has taken a liking to a pair of hand-crafted brown loafers made for him by artisans in Leon, Mexico, and given to him during his 2012 visit. He will wear those in retirement, Lombardi said.

Lombardi also elaborated on the College of Cardinals meetings that will take place after the papacy becomes vacant ? crucial gatherings in which cardinals will discuss the problems facing the church and set a date for the start of the conclave to elect Benedict's successor.

The first meeting isn't expected until Monday, Lombardi said, since the official convocation to cardinals to come to Rome will only go out on Friday ? the first day of what's known as the "sede vacante," or the vacancy between papacies.

In all, 115 cardinals under the age of 80 are expected in Rome for the conclave to vote on who should become the next pope. Two other eligible cardinals have already said they are not coming, one from Britain and another from Indonesia. Cardinals who are 80 and older can join the College meetings but won't participate in the conclave or vote.

Benedict has already given the cardinals the go-ahead to move up the start date of the conclave ? tossing out the traditional 15-day waiting period. But the cardinals won't be able to set a date until their official meetings begin Monday.

Lombardi also described Benedict's final 48 hours as pope: On Tuesday, he was packing, arranging for documents to be sent to the various Vatican archives and separating out the personal papers he will take with him into retirement.

On Wednesday, Benedict holds his final public general audience in St. Peter's Square ? an event that has already brought in 50,000 ticket requests. He won't greet visiting prelates or VIPs as he normally does, but will meet some visiting leaders ? from Slovakia, San Marino, Andorra and his native Bavaria ? privately afterward.

On Thursday, the pope meets with his cardinals in the morning and then flies by helicopter at 5 p.m. to Castel Gandolfo, the papal residence south of Rome. Benedict will greet parishioners there from the palazzo's balcony ? his final public act as pope.

Then, at 8 p.m., the exact time at which his retirement becomes official, the Swiss Guards standing outside the doors of the palazzo at Castel Gandolfo will go off duty, their service protecting the head of the Catholic Church finished.

Benedict's personal security will be assured by Vatican police, Lombardi said.

Koop transformed surgeon general post

With his striking beard and starched uniform, former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop became one of the most recognizable figures of the Reagan era ? and one of the most unexpectedly enduring.

His nomination in 1981 met a wall of opposition from women's groups and liberal politicians, who complained President Ronald Reagan selected Koop, a pediatric surgeon and evangelical Christian from Philadelphia, only because of his conservative views, especially his staunch opposition to abortion.

Soon, though, he was a hero to AIDS activists, who chanted "Koop, Koop" at his appearances but booed other officials. And when he left his post in 1989, he left behind a landscape where AIDS was a top research and educational priority, smoking was considered a public health hazard, and access to abortion remained largely intact.

Koop, who turned his once-obscure post into a bully pulpit for seven years during the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations and who surprised both ends of the political spectrum by setting aside his conservative personal views on issues such as homosexuality and abortion to keep his focus sharply medical, died Monday at his home in Hanover, N.H. He was 96.

An assistant at Koop's Dartmouth College institute, Susan Wills, confirmed his death but didn't disclose its cause.

Dr. Richard Carmona, who served as surgeon general a decade ago under President George W. Bush, said Koop was a mentor to him and preached the importance of staying true to the science even if it made politicians uncomfortable.

"He set the bar high for all who followed in his footsteps," Carmona said.

Although the surgeon general has no real authority to set government policy, Koop described himself as "the health conscience of the country" and said modestly just before leaving his post that "my only influence was through moral suasion."

A former pipe smoker, Koop carried out a crusade to end smoking in the United States; his goal had been to do so by 2000. He said cigarettes were as addictive as heroin and cocaine. And he shocked his conservative supporters when he endorsed condoms and sex education to stop the spread of AIDS.

Chris Collins, a vice president of amFAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, said many people don't realize what an important role Koop played in the beginning of the AIDS epidemic.

"At the time, he really changed the national conversation, and he showed real courage in pursuing the duties of his job," Collins said.

Even after leaving office, Koop continued to promote public health causes, from preventing childhood accidents to better training for doctors.

"I will use the written word, the spoken word and whatever I can in the electronic media to deliver health messages to this country as long as people will listen," he promised.

In 1996, he rapped Republican presidential hopeful Bob Dole for suggesting that tobacco was not invariably addictive, saying Dole's comments "either exposed his abysmal lack of knowledge of nicotine addiction or his blind support of the tobacco industry."

Although Koop eventually won wide respect with his blend of old-fashioned values, pragmatism and empathy, his nomination met staunch opposition.

Foes noted that Koop traveled the country in 1979 and 1980 giving speeches that predicted a progression "from liberalized abortion to infanticide to passive euthanasia to active euthanasia, indeed to the very beginnings of the political climate that led to Auschwitz, Dachau and Belsen."

But Koop, a devout Presbyterian, was confirmed after he told a Senate panel he would not use the surgeon general's post to promote his religious ideology. He kept his word.

In 1986, he issued a frank report on AIDS, urging the use of condoms for "safe sex" and advocating sex education as early as third grade.

He also maneuvered around uncooperative Reagan administration officials in 1988 to send an educational AIDS pamphlet to more than 100 million U.S. households, the largest public health mailing ever.

Koop personally opposed homosexuality and believed sex should be saved for marriage. But he insisted that Americans, especially young people, must not die because they were deprived of explicit information about how HIV was transmitted.

Koop further angered conservatives by refusing to issue a report requested by the Reagan White House, saying he could not find enough scientific evidence to determine whether abortion has harmful psychological effects on women.

Koop maintained his personal opposition to abortion, however. After he left office, he told medical students it violated their Hippocratic oath. In 2009, he wrote to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, urging that health care legislation include a provision to ensure doctors and medical students would not be forced to perform abortions. The letter briefly set off a security scare because it was hand delivered.

Koop served as chairman of the National Safe Kids Campaign and as an adviser to President Bill Clinton's health care reform plan.

At a congressional hearing in 2007, Koop spoke about political pressure on the surgeon general post. He said Reagan was pressed to fire him every day, but Reagan would not interfere.

Koop, worried that medicine had lost old-fashioned caring and personal relationships between doctors and patients, opened his institute at Dartmouth to teach medical students basic values and ethics. He also was a part-owner of a short-lived venture, drkoop.com, to provide consumer health care information via the Internet.

Koop was born in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, the only son of a Manhattan banker and the nephew of a doctor. He said by age 5 he knew he wanted to be a surgeon and at age 13 he practiced his skills on neighborhood cats.

He attended Dartmouth, where he received the nickname Chick, short for "chicken Koop." It stuck for life.

Koop received his medical degree at Cornell Medical College, choosing pediatric surgery because so few surgeons practiced it.

In 1938, he married Elizabeth Flanagan, the daughter of a Connecticut doctor. They had four children, one of whom died in a mountain climbing accident when he was 20.

Koop was appointed surgeon-in-chief at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia and served as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

He pioneered surgery on newborns and successfully separated three sets of conjoined twins. He won national acclaim by reconstructing the chest of a baby born with the heart outside the body.

Although raised as a Baptist, he was drawn to a Presbyterian church near the hospital, where he developed an abiding faith. He began praying at the bedside of his young patients ? ignoring the snickers of some of his colleagues.

Koop's wife died in 2007, and he married Cora Hogue in 2010.

He was by far the best-known surgeon general and for decades afterward was still a recognized personality.

"I was walking down the street with him one time" about five years ago, recalled Dr. George Wohlreich, director of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, a medical society with which Koop had longstanding ties. "People were yelling out, 'There goes Dr. Koop!' You'd have thought he was a rock star."

Sunday collection: sacred dying | Pilgrim's Moon

A far green countryI woke up this morning thinking about death. As you do.

And then the first thing I saw on Facebook was this update from a friend about our age:

Two contemporaries facing the end of their lives. Much need for helpful reflection about how we prepare others and ourselves for this critical stage of our journey.

I hope you don?t mind my second Sunday Collection being on the topic of death and dying. It?s not a comfortable subject for everyone, but, as whoever it was said, death is the only thing certain about life, along with taxes.

Too soon?

The reason I woke up thinking about death was because of the shocking news that came my way on Friday of a former colleague?s death from cancer at the age of 27.

This was unusually young, but one of the normal markers of our lives as we grow older is that we begin to lose our friends, life partners and contemporary family. Sometimes it?s much too soon, sometimes death comes at the right time, even when it?s still difficult for those of us left behind.

And perhaps some of you reading this are yourselves in the process of loosening your hold on life.

And yet we still don?t seem to have enough by way of mechanisms to cope. Our society still prefers to have death take place neatly around the corner out of sight.

Practical preparations

There are some practicalities which makes it easier for loved ones to cope with our deaths, like making a Will and letting people know what funeral arrangements to make. These things are important and we know we should do them. (I haven?t, yet.)

For those in the UK, Amnesty is holding Make a Will Fortnight, which means you can make a Will free of charge or for a donation to Amnesty. So no more excuses.

Digital death

An added complication today for those of us who have rather large online footprints is what happens to all those blogs, Facebook and Twitter accounts, emails etc. Does your social media life live on after you do? Will Facebook friends be wishing you a happy birthday years after you?ve kicked the bucket? (Not such a bad thing, I guess.)

There?s a good article about this in New Scientist, and there are also services such as Legacy Locker which can help. For a fee. Or you could simply leave a document with usernames and passwords for all your online services. Keep it up to date though, and keep it safe.

But the practical considerations are not the main things I want to talk about today.

Sacred preparation

Medical care for the dying has come a long way in the last couple of decades, although there are still terrible experiences and people dying alone on trolleys in hospital corridors or collapsing in the street.

The Hospice movement has transformed the experience of those nearing the end of life for countless thousands of people, with excellent palliative care and, just as important, the acknowledgement that death is coming, no pretences.

Hospice and hospital chaplains of all faiths work with those nearing death.

Meanwhile new ways of accompanying the dying are appearing.

Music

One of the most beautiful, I think, is music.

A few years ago, as I sat by the bed of my 84 year old aunt on the last night of her life, I was moved suddenly to begin singing to her. She had been unresponsive and apparently unaware of my presence, but as I began to sing the Salve Regina (she was a lifelong Catholic, and lover of music of all kinds), she turned her bony face slowly in my direction, an expression crossing her face of a sort of peaceful yearning. I knew then that she was ready.

There are many a capella groups now who sing in hospices as part of a ministry to the dying. The Threshold Singers are based in Boston, the Harbour Singers in Maine, and the Hallowell Singers in Vermont/New Hampshire. (I doubt this is a phenomenon only of the Eastern Seaboard, but these are the groups I know of.)

Hallowell have this to say of the beginning of their ministry:

In March 2003, during the final week of Dinah Breunig?s life, a group of friends from church and community surrounded her bed to sing for and with her while she lay dying. ?On two different evenings, over 30 people came to help Dinah pass over on the wings of the songs she so loved in her life. ?It was during those evenings, our voices joined in harmony, our hearts ?open with grief and love, that Hallowell was born. We have been singing this way ever since, in groups anywhere from 4 to 35, quiet reverent songs over a person in their last hours, or songs of joy and spirit for someone in hospice care but still fully alive in their dying weeks.

Soul midwives

And Soul Midwives are non-medical people who accompany and support the dying. What do they do?

They keep a loving vigil.
They create and hold a sacred and healing space for the dying person
They recognise and support the individual needs of the departing soul to enable a tranquil death.
They use sound, touch, colour and smell and other gentle techniques to help alleviate pain and anxiety.
They support families and loved ones.

And there?s also the organisation from whose name I took the title of this post: the Sacred Dying Foundation. Here?s what they say about their ministry:

The Sacred Dying Philosophy is concerned with bringing spirituality, through presence and ritual, into the physical act of dying. Sacred Dying facilitates the creation of a setting where death is experienced with honor, respect, and sacredness. This can be as simple as being present with a loved member of your family and as complicated as transforming the vision of our entire society.

Afterlife or not?

Perhaps here would be an appropriate place to tackle the question of whether this life is all there is.

Does it matter? Well on some levels, profoundly, but on others perhaps not so much.

Do people who believe that death is the end approach it with more fear than those whose religious belief makes them feel sinful? Or more resignation. I?m not sure. (I?d love to hear what you think about this.)

But surely ritual and sacramental approaches to dying are the practices to which we should aspire, whatever our beliefs.

Personally, I don?t believe this life is the end, although I have no idea what might come next. Here?s what Gandalf told Pippin:

Being ready

Born like a dream
In this dream of a world
How easy in mind I am
I who will fade away
like the morning dew

Ikkyu Sojun

We?re all amateurs at dying. And we may not have the luxury of preparation. Some of us may prefer the idea of a quick and sudden end. Personally, I would prefer not to ?take a header? into death without some warning, but the choice is not mine.

We lie down at night, all of us, even the most healthy, not quite knowing if we will get up tomorrow. There?s a surrender in Sojun?s words above which would be wonderful to live by.

My final recommendation is a book called The Grace in Dying, by Kathleen Dowling Singh. Offering insights from spirituality, transpersonal psychology and her experience over many years accompanying the dying, this book is full of treasures.

So I leave you ? and I hope that in spite of all this talk of death and dying you have a wonderful week ? with the words of C.S. Lewis and The Last Battle:

It is as hard to explain how this sunlit land was different from the old Narnia as it would be to tell you how the fruits of that country taste. Perhaps you might get some idea of it if you think like this. You may have been in a room in which there was a window that looked out on a lovely bay of the sea or a green valley that wound away among mountains. And in the wall of that room opposite to the window there may have been a looking-glass. And as you turned away from the window you suddenly caught sight of that sea or that valley, all over again, in the looking-glass. And the sea in the mirror, or the valley in the mirror, were in one sense just the same as the real ones: yet at the same time they were somehow different ? deeper, more wonderful, more like places in a story ? in a story you have never heard but very much want to know.

Farther up, and farther in?

Why not make your own energy drink? | MNN - Mother Nature Network

Health concerns about the typical energy drink?are everywhere, so?you may not want to depend on them for energy. After all, not only can they be extremely high in caffeine, but they also tend to be full of sugar, artificial colorings and other unnatural ingredients. They don?t exactly fit my whole food, traditional diet criteria. The question is, how do you replace them?

?

?

But having an afternoon pick-me-up can be helpful, which is why I wanted to share a few recipes for simple homemade, energy drinks.

?

Chia Pomegranate Green Tea Cooler

?

Why it works: Tea is a natural source of caffeine, however it also contains an amino acid called ?theanine? which is a natural relaxer with anti-anxiety properties. It helps energize you without making you jittery. When you are stressed, both the energy boost from the caffeine and the relaxing effect of the theanine can be helpful. Pomegranate juice is full of nutrients, flavonoids, and antioxidants and is low in sugar. This healthy juice can help give you a boost from nutrition alone. (It?s also worth noting that according to Bowden, it is called the ?natural Viagra? and has been traditionally associated with love and sexual vitality.) The chia seeds were traditionally used as a support for long journeys. The gel-like substance they form when put in liquid absorbs slowly into the body, for a slow release of nutrients and energy. Chia seeds are high in vitamins and minerals, making them a favorite with many nutritionists.

?

Homemade Chocolate Milk

Directions: In a blender, mix 1 cup of whole milk with 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of fair trade cocoa powder, a dash of vanilla extract and 1 tablespoon of maple syrup or honey. Blend until combined.

?

Why it works: Milk gives you good source of both protein and fat for sustained energy. Milk also contains some natural sugar that gives a boost of energy. Use grade B maple syrup for a higher nutrient content, and you will add both more natural sugars for a more instant energy boost. The cocoa powder gives some caffeine, as well as more antioxidants and nutrients (such as magnesium). I prefer raw, pastured milk.

?

Green Drink

Directions: The darling of the raw foodie and many health conscience people, the green drink trend shows no sign of slowing down and there are many green drink mixtures available online. Make according to the package directions, or add a scoop to a smoothie.

?

Why it works: Green drinks work because they are high in nutrients, very alkalizing (which makes you feel refreshed and energized). Plus, some mixes contain herbs known for their energizing attributes. Mix them with a pomegranate, noni, or other antioxidant-rich juice, or combine with a high protein snack like nuts or canned fish for sustained energy.

?

The above recipes are gentle, natural options for an energy boost and are perfect for a mid-day drink. Being more natural, and not as high in caffeine, they may not keep you in a working frenzy all night long when you need it, but on the plus side, they offer many health benefits.?

Reports: U.S. Radar to Boost Missile Defense in Japan

???? ??? ????? ????????
by Naharnet Newsdesk 24 February 2013, 05:20 W460

Tokyo and Washington plan to install a U.S. early-warning radar system at a coastal base near Kyoto to bolster defenses against the North Korean missile threat, reports said Sunday.

The X-band radar, capable of precisely tracking the trajectory of a ballistic missile, allows U.S. forces to launch intercept missiles from the ground and sea once a ballistic missile has been detected.

It will be the second X-band radar system to be installed in Japan after another was set up in northern Aomori prefecture.

The X-band radar system will be built in an Air Self-Defense Force base in Kyotango, northwest of Kyoto, on the coast of the Sea of Japan, or East Sea, Kyodo News and Jiji Press agencies reported, citing unnamed sources.

The location was picked as it was likely that a North Korean missile targeting Guam or Hawaii would fly over western or central parts of Japan, Kyodo said.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and U.S. President Barack Obama confirmed in their meeting Friday in Washington that the two countries would work together on the radar installation, the reports said.

Use a Nut and Bolt Drawer to Store Loose Board Game Pieces

Use a Nut and Bolt Drawer to Store Loose Board Game Pieces

Board game pieces, especially from complicated role-playing games, can be tough to keep track of. A nut and bolt drawer is a great tool to keep everything in one place.

David Caolo at Unclutterer suggests keeping the drawer wherever you store your board games. The see-through bins are ideal for segmenting and identifying small pieces, and you won't risk different pieces from the same game getting mixed up like they might in the original box. You can even pull individual trays out to use as token holders while you play.

With this system in place, you could get rid of your game boxes entirely, and even use the boards as pieces of functional art. Hit up the source link below for more great board game storage ideas.

Debt Consolidation and Divorce - Understanding the facts | Debt ...

Navigating a divorce can prove to be quite challenging especially when severing complex financial ties. If you are in the process of a divorce and are wondering how to separate your finances, it is helpful to have an idea about what to expect. Whether you need to consolidate debt after a divorce or you are wondering about consolidating prior, understanding the facts involved can aid you in making an informed decision for your financial future.

Handling Joint Accounts

If you have accounts that are in both you and your divorcee?s name, it is best to take care of the account prior to the divorce. As long as your name is on the loan, you will be legally obligated to repay the debt. Some of the loans commonly shared in a marriage include joint credit card accounts, car titles, mortgages, and other personal property such as boats and RVs. Handling each debt separately prior to finalizing the divorce is the most optimal and simplistic method for handling finances during a divorce proceeding.

Liquefying a Mortgage

A mortgage in both names is considered as joint debt with both parties liable for the debt. Since this debt is secured, it can not be consolidated into a traditional debt consolidation loan. One solution many divorcees select is selling the home and splitting the funds garnered from the sale of the home. As a benefit of taking this route, monies derived from the sale can be directed towards paying off joint credit card debt that is owned by both parties.

Handling a Joint Car Title

A car is often shared by both spouses and during a divorce, it can be difficult to decide who gets to keep the vehicle. In a contested divorce, the judge will likely determine who is allowed to keep the automobile. However in the case of an uncontested divorce both parties can amicably agree on a viable solution. One option most divorcing couples select is to have the individual who will be keeping the car refinance the loan in their name. This ensures that all subsequent debt associated with the vehicle will be in the name of the one who is using the car. Another option is to sell the car and split the funds evenly between both people.

Debt Consolidation

For debt consolidation to occur, both parties must already be divorced with each loan in one person?s name. After the divorce has been finalized each party can consolidate their remaining debt on their own as an effective debt management strategy. Since a debt consolidation involves acquiring a new loan to pay off unsecured debt, it is not feasible to perform a debt consolidation with both spouses prior to the divorce.

Understanding the options available when dissolving joint loans can help each individual in planning their finances for a positive outcome.

"Live Pink, Bleed Orange" Lady Vols game special for Coach Holly Warlick

Sunday night the Lady Vols turned in their orange and white uniforms for pink ones.

It was the annual "Live Pink, Bleed Orange" game to raise awareness about breast cancer.

This year, for Lady Vols Head Coach, Holly Warlick, the color pink took on a special meaning.

"There is no better vehicle than the Lady Vols to get word out and spread awareness about breast cancer," said Amy Dunaway with Susan G. Komen.

Dunaway and her crew with Komen Knoxville sold pink pom poms outside Thompson-Boling Arena Sunday to increase the presence of pink inside.

Pink was on everything from shoes to whistles to Holly Warlick.

Warlick's sister, Marion, was diagnosed with breast cancer in August.

"I couldn't understand it, because?I didn't feel bad," explained Marion Ferrill, "I could have been depressed but I didn't know what for, I didn't know anything yet."

The cancer was found through a routine mammogram. That is something?Holly and Marion?encourage all women to get.

"You do need to sit and look at my case and everybody's, I'm not the only one out there. If you do this it will save your life and?I hope that's what they come away with."

The game ball Sunday night?went to Holly's sister.

Holly explained, "I gave her a ball and said she's my greatest hero because she is, because as we are battling the game, that is a battle of life."

Currently, Marion?is cancer free?and both sisters hope it stays that way, "We've gotta stay on this and find a cure, because it's just everyone you know has been touched by it."

This game was a part of the "Play 4Kay" women's basketball initiative. It is an organization named for the former North Carolina State Head Women's Basketball Coach, Kay Yow, who died in 2009.

Also, Holly Warlick along with LSU's Head Coach, Nikki Caldwell, have started "Champions For A Cause" after Holly and Marion lost their grandmother to cancer.?

You can read online through?Monday night to bid in a silent auction to raise money to find a cure.

New study to predict future shape of coastline

National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (UK)

A new experiment is underway that will help forecast the shape of the Dutch coastline under changing climate conditions, involving scientists and engineers from the National Oceanography Centre (NOC).

The "STRAINS" (STRAtification Impacts on Nearshore Sediment) experiment is an international study, designed to understand how the presence of the River Rhine plume a buoyant mass of freshwater formed as the river meets the denser seawater at its mouth affects sediment transport along the Dutch coastline. NOC will provide the scientific underwater platforms that will measure turbulence and sediment transport in the nearshore area off the coast of the Netherlands. NOC staff will also help in the design and planning of the overall experiment.

This information will contribute to coastal management strategies dealing with future coastal hazards and their impact on the natural and built environment in coastal zones predicted to be exacerbated in the coming decades as a result of climate change.

Large rivers such as the Rhine are important transporters of sediment from terrestrial sources to the oceans. The Rhine flows through Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and the Netherlands, before it meets the North Sea at the Hook of Holland where the Rhine plume forms. The plume is laden with the river's sediment load, and how this load is dispersed by the plume can have a significant impact on the shape of the coastline.

"The measurements will be essential for understanding the sediment transport processes in the water column and near the bed," said Dr Alex Souza of the National Oceanography Centre in Liverpool, who helped conceive the project last year with colleagues at collaborating institutes.

"The measurement rigs will be used to investigate processes that impact morphological evolution of the nearshore area. The rigs use state-of-art equipment that can measure the current velocities, turbulence, suspended sediment and water stratification over the full water column and near bed dynamics."

The STRAINS experiment, in support of the Dutch NEMO project (Nearshore Monitoring and Modelling), involves NOC, the University of Washington and the Technical University of Delft. NEMO is a research project which aims to make significant advances in our ability to forecast the shape of coastlines in the coming decades. The project is lead by Delft University of Technology, under the supervision of Professor Marcel Stive.

Dr Souza has been studying the dynamics of the Rhine plume since the early 1990s. He has been a strong advocate of the effects of stratification on sediment transport and will be publishing a study on this topic later this month, highlighting the importance of density effects on sediment transport and of the use of fully three-dimensional models for modelling sediment transport.

Sacramento mayor calls NBA All-Star trip a success

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson described his trip to the NBA All-Star game in Houston, Texas as a success.

The three-time all-star attended the game this time on official city business as he hoped to lobby team owners and other league officials close to a potential relocation of the Sacramento Kings.

Johnson did not have a meeting scheduled with NBA commissioner David Stern or any of the team owners who would ultimately decide the fate of the Kings, but said, ?I will put myself in the path whenever possible.?

?If I run into someone and I know they are an owner, I will do my best to update them on what we are doing in Sacramento,? Johnson said.

A bid to buy and relocate the Sacramento Kings to Seattle has already been filed ahead of the March 1 deadline.

Johnson hopes to announce a counter offer by the same date, as he waits to finalize financing for the plan he calls ?play to win?.

While Stern said Sacramento has an open door to the NBA and will have an opportunity to present a counter offer, he was pleased with the Seattle bid as well.

?There is a great and strong application from a terrific city to bring in a third and possibly fourth team in a brand new building, a well financed ownership group?that?s really good.? If you?re a commissioner you like that,? said Stern.

NBA team owners could approve, deny or delay a decision on the deal at their board of governors meeting on April 18.

Wal-Mart shares fall on report of weak February sales

(Reuters) - Shares of Wal-Mart Stores Inc fell 2.1 percent on Friday after Bloomberg quoted a mid-level executive's email as saying the world's largest retailer had the worst sales start to any month in seven years in February.

Wal-Mart executives blamed the poor sales performance on increased payroll taxes as well as delayed tax returns, Bloomberg said.

Higher payroll taxes this year are seen as a potential problem for Wal-Mart and other discount retailers that try to attract lower-income customers who have less disposable income.

"In case you haven't seen a sales report these days, February (month-to-date) sales are a total disaster," Jerry Murray, a Wal-Mart vice president who works on finance in the U.S. logistics division, said in a February 12 email to other executives, Bloomberg reported. "The worst start to a month I have seen in my (about) 7 years with the company."

The weak February sales start came after a disappointing January, according to an email from Cameron Geiger, senior vice president of Wal-Mart U.S. Replenishment. Geiger's email was also quoted by Bloomberg. The replenishment department works on moving products from distribution centers to stores.

"Have you ever had one of those weeks where your best- prepared plans weren't good enough to accomplish everything you set out to do?" Geiger asked in a February 1 email to company executives. "Well, we just had one of those weeks here at Walmart U.S. Where are all the customers? And where's their money?"

Wal-Mart is scheduled to report fourth-quarter earnings on Thursday and has not pre-reported any sales figures.

Analysts on average expect fourth-quarter sales at Walmart U.S. discount stores open at least a year to rise 1.7 percent, excluding gasoline sales, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Asked for a comment on the Bloomberg report, Wal-Mart spokesman David Tovar said in a statement: "As with any organization, we often see internal communications that are not entirely accurate, that lack the proper context and represent individual opinions."

Wal-Mart shares closed down 2.1 percent at $69.30 on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday.

Life experiences put their stamp on the next generation: New insights from epigenetics

Feb. 14, 2013 ? The 18th century natural philosopher Jean-Baptiste Lamarck proposed that the necks of giraffes lengthened as a consequence of the cumulative effort, across generations, to reach leaves just out of their grasp. This view of evolution was largely abandoned with the advent of modern genetic theories to explain the transmission of most important traits and many medical illnesses across generations.

However, there has long been the impression that major life events, like psychological traumas, not only have effects on individuals who directly experience these events, but also have effects on their children. For example, cross-generational effects have been well-documented in the children of Nazi death camp survivors. Similar issues have been reported in the context of mood disorders and addiction. Until recently, these trans-generational effects were attributed to changes in the way that parents treated their children or the child's reaction to learning about the parent's history.

In the most recent issue of Biological Psychiatry, Swiss researchers from the University of Zurich and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, led by Dr. Isabelle Mansuy, discuss how the emergence of the field of epigenetics has introduced a new component to this discussion -- the trans-generational transmission of changes in the regulation of gene expression.

"The question of the inheritance of acquired traits has puzzled biologists and clinicians for decades. Although it has been consistently observed as early as in the 18th century, the time has now come that sufficiently strong and convincing evidence has accumulated to firmly accept it," said Mansuy.

The genetic transmission of traits reflects alterations in genetic structure, i.e., the base pairs that form DNA. Epigenetics, on the other hand, involves cellular processes that do not alter the structure of DNA. Instead, epigenetic mechanisms, including the methylation of DNA or of specific residues on histone "supporter" proteins, influence the extent to which individual genes are converted into messenger RNA. These changes can occur in any cell of the body, but when they occur in the germ cells (sperm or eggs) the changes may be passed to the next generation.

The changes in DNA structure are random events that acquire functional significance in the context of Darwin's "natural selection" process. In contrast, the epigenetic reactions to specific environments are designed to enable that organism to cope with that context. When these traits are passed to the next generation, it is as if the newborn arrives prepared for that specific environment. Problems arise when the epigenetic processes give rise to traits that are not adaptive for the offspring, such as heightened stress reactivity, or when the environment has changed.

"This is a remarkable story with far-reaching implications," commented Dr. John Krystal, Editor of Biological Psychiatry. "There is a suspicion that epigenetic processes may be reversed more easily than genetic traits, exemplified by the development of HDAC inhibitors. This is a rapidly evolving research area that has captured a great deal of attention."

Mayor Dave Bing used his?State?of the City address Wednesday to highlight positive moves Detroit has made to address its financial woes and gave no hint as to whether he knows if the?state?is about to take over control of the city.

"The picture is not all doom and gloom," Bing said. "Every day there are more signs of hope and possibilities. We can't ? and won't ? give up on our city."

The city faces a $327 million budget deficit, cash flow shortages and the specter that Gov. Rick Snyder may soon appoint a financial manager over Detroit. A?state?appointed review team in December began taking a second look at Detroit's books, ongoing fiscal troubles and Bing's restructuring plans. That team is expected in the coming days or weeks to submit its report to the Republican Snyder. Snyder has said he will use that report in deciding whether an emergency manager will be placed over the city's finances.

Positive moves so far during Bing's first term include a $300 million reduction in city spending, about 3,700 fewer jobs on Detroit's payroll, more than $4 million in administrative cost savings by turning over many Health Department services to a public-private partnership, and a 7 percent jump in income tax collections.

Bing did use his address to point a finger or two at Lansing.

Detroit received $93 million less in revenue sharing last year from the?state?than it did in 2009 when he was elected mayor, Bing said.

Over the past 11 years, revenue sharing to Detroit has been cut more than $700 million, he added.

"It is clear that if Detroit had received its agreed upon share of revenues from the?state, our financial picture would not be as grim today," he said.

Some of the cuts Bing has made, especially to jobs and benefits have opened him to heavy criticism from the city's municipal?unions?and some on the City Council.

With the help of?state?legislators, a public lighting authority is being created to improve Detroit's antiquated street lighting system.

The city's police department also is being restructured to help put more officers on the streets to tackle Detroit's high crime rate. One hundred officers are expected to be moved to patrols and criminal investigations this spring, he said.

Bing also said his administration is well on its way in completing his promise of demolishing 10,000 of the city's more than 30,000 vacant and abandoned houses by the end of his term. So far, about 6,700 houses have been torn down.

"It is time to transform the image of Detroit, and we must do it by working together," Bing said. "Too often, people focus only on the negative things in our city."

Henry Strobhart watched Bing deliver his speech on television and said the mayor offered little to residents on when help would come to Detroit's struggling neighborhoods.

"I don't like that when I vote for a guy and he doesn't address the issues of the neighborhoods," said Strobhart, 58. "We need police, firefighters and EMS."

GOP finally finds sacrificial lamb to lose Massachusetts Senate race

Gabriel E. Gomez, a former US Navy SEAL and private equity ?investor, is set to kick off his campaign for the Republican nomination for US Senate Tuesday, with a press release and Web video, said a senior adviser.

Gomez, who took out nomination papers Monday to run in the special election to replace Senator John F. Kerry, will not speak publicly until later.

?I?m running because I refuse to be cynical about America or about America?s future,? he said in a lengthy statement released Monday night. ?I?m a doer and an optimist by nature and especially about our country. Certainly people will say, ?This can?t be fixed.? Well, I?ve spent a good part of my life working on and accomplishing a lot of things most people said were either too hard or impossible.?

His entry to the race sets up a contested Republican primary, pitting Gomez against state Representative Daniel B. Winslow, a ?former aide to Governor Mitt ?Romney.

Gomez had previously said that he was likely to run, and party insiders have been preparing for his campaign, following the decision by better-known figures, such as former senator Scott Brown, to stay out of the race.

Gomez has begun hiring staff, including Lenny Alcivar, a former campaign manager for gubernatorial candidate Charles D. Baker, and Gail ?Gitcho, a former aide to ?Romney and Brown.

Though largely unknown, Gomez is quietly gathering support from top Republicans. He will now have until Feb. 27 to collect 10,000 certified signatures from voters to qualify for the April 30 primary.

A senior adviser to Gomez, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the candidate will speak publicly at a formal kick-off event planned for sometime later.

In his statement Monday, Gomez decried partisanship in Washington, but did not outline his position on any specific issues.

?I?m not a politician, and there will be times when folks will ask me questions about the inner working of politics that I don?t know about,? he said.

?I?m a quick study. I?ll figure all the political jargon out, but I?m not going to adopt it.?

Gomez is in the process of hiring a major firm to gather his signatures, SpoonWorks Inc., at a cost of more than $100,000, said a top GOP official who has been consulting with Gomez.

Harold Hubschman, owner of the company, would not comment, saying he does not discuss his clients? business publicly.

There is concern among ?Republicans that the short time window for gathering signatures, amid rough weather, could jeopardize the party?s chances of fielding a candidate.

Hubschman, who has been paid more than $2.5 million over the last decade on petition drives for state races and referendums, according to state campaign finance records, said it can be done.

?We know we can do it,? Hubschman said. ?It?s not impossible. It?s just very difficult.?

Winslow will also use a signature-?gathering firm to supplement his volunteer workers, he said.

He has put $100,000 of his own money ?into the campaign, much of which will be spent on that ?effort to make sure he can get on the primary ballot.

State Senate minority leader Bruce E. Tarr, a Republican of Gloucester, is also weighing a run.

Democrats, with a far larger political infrastructure and candidates with more name recognition, are not facing the same obstacle.

The top Democratic candidates are both congressmen: US Representatives Edward J. Markey of Malden and ?Stephen F. Lynch of South ?Boston.

Both had volunteers gathering signatures during the storm and its aftermath.
