iPad 3 Arrives for Grand Island Senior High Teachers

Students at Grand Island Senior High had the day off today, but school was in session for teachers. Over 165 iPads were given to teachers at GISH. Faculty used the day to learn how to operate the new iPad 3.

Cory Gearhart is Executive Director of IT for Grand Island Public Schools. He says a lot of assessment has taken place to get where they are today.

"We took a step back and just kind of looked at where the district is at right now and where do we want to be. We looked at where curriculum is going and it's obviously going the digital route rather than the analog, text book route," said Gearhart.

Switching to iPads is a process which Gearhart says will continue into the next school year.

Jeff Gilbertson is the Principal at Grand Island Senior High. He says the school is moving in a modern direction.

"We are done buying text books. Sometimes that shocks people. For example, this year we did not purchase a text book for biology, environmental, physical, or earth science," said Gilbertson.

Today was only phase one of the iPad era at Grand Island Senior High. In January, over 1,000 iPads will be handed out to students.

Teacher Robyn Warner says it's vital to provide these resources to students. She says, "It is exciting because our whole world is moving towards technology. So if our students are going to be successful in the world when they leave GISH, then we need to be able to offer those opportunities to them."
